What does "self taught" mean anyway?

It seems a fair amount of people doing web development (programming or doing UI, UX, branding, digital marketing, and related stuff are calling themselves "self-taught". Now, what the hell does that even mean?

If you read a book, watch a tutorial or have an informal mentor you are not self taught. Someone else helped you. Some one else taught you.

Self taught maybe means you did not received a formal education (e.g. college) in whatever you do, for example building houses. But someone, in some way or another helped you to learn and master what you can do.

If for example you learn Vue by watching the tutorials on vuemastery and then some others as well on youtube please think it twice nextime before calling yourself "self-taught"
