Jira Cloud still can't set a default value on most system fields in company-managed projects. The request (JRACLOUD-4812) has been open since 2004 and has about 2,800 votes. Here's what actually works today.
1. Team-managed projects: built in. Project settings → Work types → pick a type → click a field (Description, Priority, custom fields) → set the default. Per work type. Done.
2. Priority: the priority scheme. Admin → Work items → Priority schemes. The scheme's default priority applies per project, not per work type.
3. Description in company-managed: the KB pattern. A Paragraph custom field with a context default → put it on the Create screen → remove the system Description from the Create screen → a post-function or Automation copies it into Description on create. It works, but costs a custom field, a screen, a screen scheme and a workflow edit per variation.
4. Automation after creation. Trigger "Work item created" → condition on work type → Edit work item. Simple, but users never see the defaults while creating, it can overwrite what they typed if you're careless (use {{issue.description}}), and it counts against automation run limits.
5. Apps using UI modifications. Forge's UI modifications API lets an app set field values inside the Create dialog itself, per project and work type.
| Approach | Visible while creating | Per work type | Company-managed | Setup cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Team-managed setting | yes | yes | no | low |
| Priority scheme | yes | no | yes | low |
| KB custom-field pattern | yes | yes | yes | high |
| Automation | no | yes | yes | medium |
| UI-modification app | yes | yes | yes | low |
Disclosure: we're Loomwise, and we built a free app in category 5, Default Field Values for Jira (https://loomwise.app/jira-default-values/). Gotchas we hit building it: the Create dialog loads app values a moment after it opens; Jira caps UI-modification apps per project; and issues created inline on boards and backlogs never open the dialog, so we fill still-empty fields after creation instead. That usually applies within seconds, occasionally 1–2 minutes.
