DDR4 Replacement Checklist: FBGA78 vs FBGA96 Pinout Guide

Hardware engineers often assume any DDR4 chip in the same package can replace another. With 8Gb DDR4, this assumption is dangerous. Here's why.

The Two 8Gb DDR4 Families
Even at the same 8Gb density, DDR4 chips come in two incompatible pinout families:

FBGA78 (1G × 8):

Micron MT40A1G8WE
Loongtion YZ48G08V ← direct replacement
FBGA96 (512M × 16):

Micron MT40A512M16JY
Samsung K4A8G165WB
CXMT CXDQ3BFAM
Loongtion YZ48G16V ← direct replacement
Swap between families and you'll have a board that won't boot. Period.

Pre-Installation Checklist

  1. Verify Physical Package Count the BGA balls (78 or 96) Measure the footprint (use a caliper if unsure) Check the PCB silk screen for the original part number
  2. Verify Organization 1G × 8 → needs FBGA78 → YZ48G08V 512M × 16 → needs FBGA96 → YZ48G16V
  3. Verify Speed Compatibility DDR4 controllers typically have margin for faster chips Running a 3200 MT/s YZ48G at 2400 MT/s is safe Never try to overclock a chip beyond its rated speed
  4. Verify Voltage DDR4 is strictly 1.2V No voltage modification needed Double-check your regulator output
  5. Verify Temperature Grade Industrial grade: −40°C minimum Commercial grade: 0°C minimum (Samsung K4A8G165WB) For factory/outdoor use, industrial grade is mandatory
  6. Run Memory Tests DDR training (auto on most controllers) memtester or vendor diagnostic for 4+ hours Temperature cycling if possible Why Loongtion YZ48G Series?
