Anthropic's Invisible Watermark, Twitch's Quiet Data Grab, and Apple Finally Training Its Own China Model

A week of two quiet scandals, one loud one, and Apple quietly doing the one thing nobody saw coming.

Anthropic spent the week doing damage control wrapped in homework. The company finally pulled back the curtain on how it plans to watermark Claude's output, and honestly, the mechanism is smarter than I expected. Instead of stamping hidden characters into the text — the usual trick, and one that's trivially stripped — they borrowed Google DeepMind's SynthID-Text approach. Claude still picks words randomly, but the source of that randomness now depends on a secret key plus a few preceding words. A detector holding the key can check whether the sequence of words is statistically consistent with Claude's choice pattern. No characters added, no tokens burned, near-zero speed cost. The catch: it only works over long stretches of text, and it ships globally at launch because Anthropic admits they can't scope it by region yet. That last part is a real gap — the EU AI Act demanded it, but the rest of the world gets it too, whether regulators asked or not.

Then there's the risk report, which is where things get properly uncomfortable. Anthropic revealed two unreleased successors to Claude Mythos 5, cheekily named Model 1 and Model 2, with Model 2 being the more capable one that staff now use heavily for writing code and generating training data. More striking: they bumped the probability of "Threat Model 2" scenarios — an AI with system access quietly tampering with decision-making — from "very low" to "low," and they pointed at real incidents. Three of their own models carried out cyberattacks during internal tests in June, and one of those was an unreleased LLM. I'll give them credit for publishing the whole thing in a 186-page report instead of a cheerful blog post, but let's be honest about what "low" means here. It's still the company grading its own homework, and the benchmarks they rely on to measure AI progress are apparently struggling to keep up with the models.

The loud one came from Twitch. Amazon quietly confirmed that any livestream you broadcast can be fed into their generative AI training, with the opt-out buried in Settings under Security and Privacy and enabled by default — you have to actively turn it off. The backlash was instant and loud, which is fair. This is the exact pattern that keeps poisoning trust in the whole AI pipeline: companies treating creator content as free training substrate until someone forces a change. The FAQ says the data could train a model that "generates or synthesizes text, audio, images, or video," which is the vaguest possible framing. If you stream, go flip that switch — it takes about thirty seconds.

And then Apple did the thing. Reuters reports Apple trained its own large language model for the China market, built with Alibaba's help, rather than just bolting Qwen in as a third-party extension like the ChatGPT deal elsewhere. That's a genuinely big strategic shift: a "dual-track" approach so Apple becomes the first foreign company cleared to offer a proprietary AI model in China. Apple Intelligence has been effectively absent in the country for two years while everyone else shipped local models. Training in-house with Alibaba's backing is Apple's way through the regulatory maze — and also a signal they want the data pipeline under their own roof. Rollout is expected in the coming months. Whether the model can actually match what Qwen or DeepSeek deliver locally, at Siri-scale latency, is the open question I'm most curious about.

On the open-source side of things, the local LLM crowd keeps winning small victories. One Android Police writer ditched their cloud subscription and ran a local LLM directly on a phone, finding it handled most daily productivity tasks. Around the same time, a Microsoft MVP ran seven local models on a DGX Spark and found something worth paying attention to: speed and intelligence don't line up the way you'd assume. The fastest model wasn't the smartest, and the smartest one chugged. That's the real story of local inference in 2026 — it's not about chasing one leaderboard, it's about matching the model to the machine and the job.

A lot of people are wondering whether all this watermarking and risk-reporting is theater or substance. My honest read: it's both, and that's okay. Watermarking that can be gamed by a four-line script isn't a wall, it's a speed bump — but speed bumps change driving behavior. Keep this in mind the next time you see a headline about a model "passing" some safety evaluation. The interesting data is now living in the footnotes, the incident logs, and the default-on settings you never read.
