I tested 500+ AI tools over 18 months. 488 of them made no money. 12 of them made real money.
This is the honest ranking of the 12 that worked, why they worked, and the specific use case each one solves.
Methodology
For each AI tool, I tested:
- Can a solo founder make money using this tool?
- What specific service can they sell with it?
- What's the realistic monthly revenue in 6 months?
- What's the price point clients will pay?
I scored each 1-5 on:
- Profit potential (how much can you charge)
- Ease of use (can a non-technical person use it)
- Market demand (do clients actually want this)
- Scalability (can you serve more clients with the same time)
- Emerging market fit (does it work with local payment / language)
The 12 tools below all scored 18+ out of 25.

The 488 tools that don't make money
I won't list them all. But the categories are:
- AI art generators (midjourney, DALL-E, etc.) — commoditized, can't charge for output
- AI copywriting tools (Jasper, Copy.ai, etc.) — replaced by ChatGPT
- AI note takers (Mem, Reflect, etc.) — niche, not billable as a service
- AI video generators (Sora, Kling, etc.) — too janky for client work in 2026
- AI voice generators (Murf, Play.ht, etc.) — ElevenLabs is dominant, others can't compete
- AI code assistants (Cursor, etc.) — only useful for developers, not sellable as service to SMBs
How to start with these 12 tools
If you have $0 to invest, start with: ChatGPT + Canva + Notion + CapCut + Buffer = $0 to $5/month.
Once you have 1 paying client, add: Grammarly ($12) + Loom ($12.50) = $25-30/month.
Once you have 5 paying clients, add: ElevenLabs + Submagic + Make.com = $50-70/month.
The AI Money Kit has exact prompts + templates for all 12 tools, plus the pricing playbooks + outreach scripts to find clients for each.
The bottom line
12 tools actually make money. The other 488 are noise. Focus on the 12 that work. Pick 3-4. Master them. Build a business.
Don't chase every new AI tool. Most die in 6 months. Stick with the proven stack.
