PHP2Shell: Two Critical PHP Vulnerabilities Every Developer Should Know About

A security alert that every web developer should pay attention to.

According to The Hacker News, two critical vulnerabilities in PHP have been identified:

  • CVE-2026-109618
  • CVE-2026-109619

Both have a reported CVSS v4.0 score of 9.2/10. They could allow attackers to execute malicious code on vulnerable servers without logging in. PHP released security fixes on October 21, 2026.

Why does this matter?

PHP powers many websites and web applications. A vulnerability in the PHP runtime can put a website at risk even when its application code appears secure.

What should developers do?

  • Check which PHP version their servers are running.
  • Apply the appropriate security updates immediately.
  • Restart PHP workers and verify that the patches are active.
  • Review server logs for suspicious activity.
  • Avoid running untrusted exploit scripts found online.

The key lesson is simple: writing secure code is important, but keeping the underlying technology updated is equally important.

Security is not something we do once. It is part of every developer's responsibility.

What do you think: do developers pay enough attention to server-level security, or do most people focus only on their application code?
