I spent the last three months testing AI tools that promise to help you make money online. Not the "get rich in 24 hours" nonsense -- the ones that real freelancers and small business owners actually use.
I tested 15 tools across five categories: content creation, image generation, coding assistants, automation, and voice/audio. Here's what actually delivered.
Content tools: mixed results.
ChatGPT and Claude are genuinely useful for drafting, brainstorming, and editing. But here's the thing people don't say enough: they won't make you money on their own. The writers earning real income with AI are the ones who already had clients and used AI to work faster. If you're starting from zero, AI helps you produce content, but finding buyers is still 100% on you.
Jasper and Copy.ai are fine but overpriced for what they offer compared to the general-purpose models.
Image generation: useful for specific niches.
Midjourney is genuinely incredible for quality. If you're selling print-on-demand designs, book covers, or social media templates, it's a legitimate money-maker. Leonardo.ai has the best free tier (150 daily credits, commercial use allowed).
But the market for AI art is crowded. Standing out requires actual design taste, not just good prompts.
The coding tools surprised me.
Cursor and GitHub Copilot are the real deal. I know someone who built a simple SaaS in two weekends using Cursor that now makes $400/month. The barrier to building software has genuinely collapsed. If you can describe what you want clearly, these tools can build it.
Claude Code is particularly good for debugging and refactoring existing projects. Worth the $20/month if you're doing any kind of development work.
What actually made money (for me and people I know):
- Freelance writing with AI assistance -- saved 40% on drafting time, same rates
- Print-on-demand with Midjourney designs -- made about $300 in the first month, tapered off
- Building a simple micro-SaaS with Cursor -- this was the biggest winner but required actual coding knowledge
- AI voiceover work using ElevenLabs -- niche but profitable for explainer videos
What didn't work:
AI content farms. Anyone telling you to mass-generate blog posts for ad revenue in 2026 is selling you 2022's playbook. Google's AI Overviews killed that strategy.
The honest bottom line:
AI tools are force multipliers, not money printers. They work best when you already have a skill -- writing, coding, designing -- and use AI to do it faster. If you have zero skills and expect AI to fill the gap, you'll burn through subscriptions and have nothing to show for it.
