How to Forecast Demand in Business Central

The Enhanced Forecasting Worksheet is a free tool designed to help Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central users generate demand forecasts using historical data. It integrates directly with the Azure AI forecasting model and lets you push results into Business Central’s native planning tools — or use them to fine-tune item planning parameters.

How does the Enhanced Forecasting Worksheet work?

It starts by letting you filter which items and locations to forecast, and how far back and forward to look. For example, you can forecast the next three months based on the past 18 months of sales. The worksheet sends your historical data to Microsoft's Azure Forecasting API, receives predicted values, and displays forecast results within the interface.

What if there’s no historical data in Business Central?

If you’re moving from another system and lack sales history, you can still use this tool by importing data. The Import Export PowerTool enables you to bring in historical sales records without affecting your general ledger. This allows the forecasting worksheet to work effectively even in newly migrated environments.

Can the forecast adjust planning parameters?

Yes. Forecasted values aren’t limited to updating demand forecasts — they can also be used to automatically calculate planning parameters like safety stock, reorder points, and maximum inventory levels. You define formulas (similar to Excel) to convert forecast data into planning values. For example, a reorder point formula might use average daily forecast multiplied by lead time.

What options are available after calculating the forecast?

You can:

  • Update Business Central’s standard demand forecast with the new predicted values.
  • Update item planning fields (such as reorder points) directly.
  • Export the results to Excel for manual adjustment and re-import later.

Forecasts can be done per location or across all locations. Once the forecast is generated and applied, it's immediately usable by MRP or other planning tools in Business Central.
