10 Ways Developers Can Save Time With AI

Software development involves much more than writing code. Developers spend hours debugging errors, reviewing code, writing tests, reading documentation, solving technical problems, and maintaining existing projects.

These tasks are essential, but they can also consume a significant amount of time. This is where Artificial Intelligence (AI) can help.

Modern AI tools can assist developers with repetitive tasks, explain unfamiliar code, generate test cases, suggest optimizations, and make it easier to explore new technologies. When used correctly, AI can help developers work more efficiently while keeping the focus on code quality and problem-solving.

In this article, let's explore 10 practical ways developers can use AI to save time in their daily workflow.

1. Generate Code Faster

One of the most common uses of AI in software development is code generation.

Instead of writing every function, class, or boilerplate component manually, developers can describe what they want to build and ask an AI coding assistant to generate an initial implementation.

For example, you might need a Python function to validate an email address, a React component for a registration form, or a Java method to sort a collection of objects.

AI can generate a starting point that you can review, modify, and integrate into your project.

How it saves time:

  • Reduces repetitive coding.
  • Helps generate boilerplate code.
  • Provides examples of unfamiliar syntax.
  • Speeds up the development of simple features.

However, generated code should always be reviewed before it is used in production. AI can produce incorrect logic or overlook important edge cases.

2. Debug Errors More Efficiently

Debugging is often one of the most time-consuming parts of software development.

A small error in a database query, API request, or conditional statement can take considerable time to identify. AI tools can help developers understand error messages and investigate potential causes.

You can provide an error message along with the relevant code and ask the AI to explain what might be wrong.

For example, if a Python application raises a TypeError, an AI assistant can explain common reasons for the error and suggest ways to investigate it.

How it saves time:

  • Explains confusing error messages.
  • Identifies potential causes of bugs.
  • Suggests debugging steps.
  • Helps developers understand unfamiliar exceptions.

The important thing is to verify the suggested solution rather than blindly applying it. Understanding the root cause will help prevent similar problems in the future.

3. Improve Code Reviews

Code reviews help teams maintain quality, consistency, and security. However, reviewing large pull requests can take a lot of time.

AI can provide an additional review by examining code for possible bugs, duplicated logic, readability problems, and missing edge cases.

For example, you can ask an AI tool to review a function and identify potential issues with error handling or input validation.

It can also suggest clearer variable names and simpler implementations.

How it saves time:

  • Highlights potentially problematic code.
  • Identifies opportunities to simplify logic.
  • Suggests improvements to readability.
  • Helps prepare code for human review.

AI should complement—not replace—human reviewers. Developers still need to evaluate architecture, business requirements, security implications, and the overall design.

4. Write Unit Tests Automatically

Testing is an important part of building reliable software, but writing comprehensive tests can be repetitive.

AI can help generate unit tests based on existing functions, classes, or API endpoints.

For example, if you have a function that calculates discounts, you can ask an AI assistant to generate tests for normal inputs, zero values, negative numbers, and boundary conditions.

This can help you think about scenarios you might otherwise overlook.

How it saves time:

  • Generates initial test cases.
  • Suggests edge cases.
  • Reduces repetitive test-writing work.
  • Helps improve test coverage.

Generated tests still require careful review. A test can pass while checking the wrong behavior, so ensure that each test reflects the actual requirements of your application.

5. Understand New Technologies Faster

Developers frequently need to learn new programming languages, frameworks, libraries, and APIs.

Reading official documentation remains important, but AI can make the learning process more interactive.

You can ask questions about a particular concept, request a simple example, or compare two different approaches to solving a problem.

For instance, a developer familiar with JavaScript can ask an AI assistant to explain Python decorators or compare React hooks with traditional class-based approaches.

How it saves time:

  • Explains unfamiliar concepts in simpler language.
  • Provides practical code examples.
  • Compares different technical approaches.
  • Helps identify which documentation topics to explore next.

AI explanations should be checked against official documentation, especially when working with new versions of a framework or library.

6. Refactor Existing Code

As applications grow, code can become difficult to maintain. Functions may become too long, logic may be duplicated, and responsibilities may become mixed together.

Refactoring improves the internal structure of code without intentionally changing its external behavior.

AI can suggest ways to break large functions into smaller units, remove duplication, improve naming, and simplify complicated conditional statements.

For example, you can provide a long Python function and ask for a more readable version while preserving its existing behavior.

How it saves time:

  • Identifies duplicated logic.
  • Suggests cleaner implementations.
  • Improves code readability.
  • Helps developers explore alternative designs.

Always run your existing tests after refactoring. A shorter implementation is not necessarily better if it changes expected behavior or makes the code harder to understand.

7. Write Technical Documentation

Documentation is necessary for maintaining projects, onboarding new developers, and helping other people understand how an application works.

Unfortunately, documentation is sometimes postponed because developers are focused on shipping features.

AI can help create a first draft of documentation from code, project descriptions, API definitions, or configuration files.

It can assist with writing README files, explaining functions, documenting API endpoints, and preparing setup instructions.

How it saves time:

  • Creates initial documentation drafts.
  • Explains complex functions.
  • Organizes installation instructions.
  • Helps maintain consistent documentation.

Developers should verify every technical detail before publishing. Incorrect setup instructions or outdated API descriptions can create more problems than they solve.

8. Work With SQL and Database Queries

Database work is another area where AI can be useful.

Writing SQL queries involving multiple tables, joins, aggregations, and subqueries can become complicated. AI can help draft queries based on a clear description of the required result.

For example, you might ask:

"Write a SQL query to calculate monthly sales for each product, including the product name and total revenue."

An AI assistant can generate an initial query and explain how its components work.

It can also help investigate slow queries and suggest indexes or alternative query structures.

How it saves time:

  • Drafts SQL queries from natural-language descriptions.
  • Explains joins and aggregations.
  • Suggests possible query optimizations.
  • Helps troubleshoot database errors.

Always test queries against your actual database schema and inspect their execution plans when performance matters. Never share production credentials or sensitive customer data with an AI tool.

9. Automate Repetitive Development Tasks

Developers often perform repetitive tasks such as renaming files, processing data, generating reports, formatting content, or checking project configurations.

AI can help create scripts that automate these activities.

For example, you can use an AI assistant to draft a Python script that processes CSV files, removes duplicate records, validates data, and exports the results to Excel.

Similarly, it can help generate shell commands, build scripts, and small utilities for everyday development tasks.

How it saves time:

  • Reduces repetitive manual work.
  • Helps create small automation scripts.
  • Simplifies data processing.
  • Makes routine workflows more consistent.

Before running generated scripts, review what they do, especially if they modify files, delete data, execute commands, or interact with production systems. Test them on sample data first.

10. Solve Technical Problems and Explore Alternatives

Sometimes the hardest part of development is not writing code but deciding how to approach a problem.

Should you use a database query or process the data in application code? Should a task run synchronously or in the background? Is caching necessary? Which data structure fits the requirements?

AI can help developers explore possible approaches and understand their trade-offs.

You can describe the problem, explain your constraints, and ask for several possible solutions.

For example, if you are designing a job-search application, AI can help you explore database structures, API integration strategies, caching options, and background processing.

How it saves time:

  • Helps brainstorm implementation strategies.
  • Compares different technical approaches.
  • Identifies potential limitations.
  • Provides a starting point for architectural discussions.

Treat AI-generated suggestions as options to investigate, not final architectural decisions. The right solution depends on your application's requirements, expected workload, budget, and maintenance needs.

Popular AI Tools Developers Can Explore

Here are a few tools that can support different parts of the development workflow:

  • GitHub Copilot — AI-assisted coding, code suggestions, and development support.
  • ChatGPT — Code explanations, debugging assistance, brainstorming, and technical problem-solving.
  • Cursor — An AI-focused code editor for working with code and project context.
  • Claude — Coding assistance, code analysis, and working through complex technical questions.
  • Gemini — Coding help, explanations, and general technical assistance.

Each tool has different capabilities, limitations, and pricing options. The most suitable choice depends on your preferred editor, programming language, project requirements, and budget.

Best Practices for Using AI in Software Development

AI can save time, but using it effectively requires good judgment.

Here are a few practices worth following:

  1. Review generated code. Understand what the code does before integrating it into your project.
  2. Protect sensitive information. Avoid sharing passwords, API keys, private credentials, or confidential customer data.
  3. Verify technical claims. Check official documentation for unfamiliar APIs, libraries, and version-specific behavior.
  4. Run tests. Validate generated code with unit tests, integration tests, and appropriate manual checks.
  5. Provide clear context. Include the relevant code, expected behavior, constraints, and error messages in your prompts.
  6. Keep learning fundamentals. Use AI to improve your understanding rather than relying on it to make every technical decision.
  7. Measure the results. Pay attention to whether AI actually reduces development time without increasing bugs or maintenance work.

Conclusion

AI is changing how developers approach everyday programming tasks. From generating code and debugging errors to writing tests, improving documentation, and automating repetitive work, AI assistants can help reduce the time spent on many routine activities.

However, faster development does not automatically mean better software. Code quality, security, maintainability, and a clear understanding of the problem remain essential.

The most effective approach is to combine AI assistance with programming knowledge, critical thinking, testing, and human review.

Start with one repetitive task in your daily workflow. Try using AI to simplify it, evaluate the result, and gradually expand your approach when it proves useful.

when the same AI writes the code, writes the tests, and reviews the PR, green checks start telling you less.

the tests are still useful, but they were shaped around the same implementation they're validating.

that's why i'd want another signal outside that loop. Tomosu PRI (Production Reliability Index) scores the change against things like code fragility and churn, so passing tests aren't the only signal before merge.

That’s a good point. When the same AI handles everything, independent checks become even more important. How does Tomosu PRI measure code fragility and churn in practice?

for fragility, Tomosu looks at structural signals around the affected code and, when production data is available, real production behavior. it also considers affected paths and callers to account for blast radius.

for code volatility, it looks at churn and hotspot density, so repeatedly changing areas get treated differently from stable ones.

these are 2 of the 7 sub indices that feed into the Production Reliability Index. the other dimensions cover drift, governance compliance, runtime signals, deployment velocity, and escalation.
