Open Source Reflections – Hacktoberfest 2025

Hacktoberfest: Open Source Reflections

This is a submission for the 2025 Hacktoberfest Writing Challenge: Open Source Reflections

This year, I had the pleasure of participating in Hacktoberfest 2025, and it was an exciting journey that provided me with valuable experiences and insights into the world of open-source development. Here's my reflection on the highs, lows, and everything in between.

Projects I Worked On

During Hacktoberfest, I contributed to multiple projects, but one that stood out was my repository, LeetCode in PHP. The repository focuses on solving LeetCode problems using PHP, and it’s been a rewarding experience maintaining it. I got to not only solve algorithmic challenges but also improve my PHP skills and learn new optimization techniques.

Highs and Lows

The most exciting part of Hacktoberfest was seeing how open-source contributions can make a real difference. Every pull request I merged or reviewed felt like a step forward, both for me and the contributors. The interaction with the community was enriching, as it gave me a chance to connect with like-minded developers from around the world.

On the flip side, one of the lows was dealing with the challenges of reviewing multiple pull requests while ensuring the code met quality standards. It was a bit overwhelming at times, but it was a valuable learning experience.

Why I Decided to Participate

Hacktoberfest has always been a great opportunity to give back to the open-source community. I love the idea of working on projects that benefit others and getting involved in meaningful ways. Plus, the excitement of earning the official Hacktoberfest t-shirt was a fun motivation!

Will I Participate Again?

Absolutely! Hacktoberfest has made me realize the power of open-source collaboration, and I plan to continue contributing year after year. The connections made and knowledge gained during the event are invaluable.

Tips for Future Hacktoberfest Participants

  1. Start Early: Don’t wait until the last minute. Contributing early gives you the time to learn and make meaningful contributions.
  2. Pick Projects That Matter: Work on projects you’re passionate about, as that will keep you motivated.
  3. Don’t Be Afraid to Start Small: Even small contributions like fixing typos or updating documentation can be valuable and a great starting point for first-time contributors.
  4. Engage with the Community: Whether it's through discussions, pull requests, or just following repositories, getting involved will help you grow as a developer.

What Open Source Means to Me

Open source is more than just writing code. It’s about creating a community where knowledge is shared freely, and everyone has the opportunity to contribute and learn. It’s a way for me to give back to the community that’s given me so much in terms of knowledge, tools, and inspiration.

Memorable Moments

One of the highlights was receiving my first pull request from a contributor I didn’t know. Seeing someone else use my project and contribute back was incredibly rewarding.

Advice for First-Time Participants

If you’re new to open-source, my advice is simple: don’t hesitate to dive in. It can be intimidating at first, but the more you contribute, the more you’ll learn. The open-source community is incredibly welcoming, and every small contribution counts.

Hacktoberfest 2025 has been a fantastic experience that has further solidified my passion for open-source. It’s about giving back, learning, and growing together with the community. I’m already looking forward to next year!
