Hello,
there must be more people like me who feel lazy about one or more aspects of their learning path. I hope this is the right place to talk about this problem: I like frontend but I feel so lazy about doing backend things - maybe you're just like that too, or the other way around?
I am currently in a retraining program in IT. In the last year we learned - amongst other things - basics of Java and C#. I entered the scene with some experience in frontend (mainly just HTML and CSS). We are currently doing a project in a team that consists of 5 people with the role "developer". Time-wise we are now half way through with the project and I only did frontend. And I am wondering... is that a bad thing?
I know it wouldn't hurt to dive deeper into the backend (currently with C#), but I am more interested in getting a deeper understanding of angular with TypeScript (which we are using rn). On the side I am learning React and trying to get better at JavaScript too.
Soon I'll start an internship where I'll use React with TypeScript.
In the future I would like to work in the frontend (not designing, but coding). I can imagine working with API's but I hope I can avoid DB's.
I prefer doing frontend because I like how it feels more creative (to me) and also more flexible. But I also know it's my comfort zone.
Can anyone relate? And do you think it's bad for my career plans? I can't really estimate how much backend knowledge will be required from me.

Keep doing what you enjoy, and once you get good at it, you'll naturally start wanting to expand your knowledge, maybe even into backend development. It's hard to learn something you're not interested in, even if it might be useful. I wish you a lot of success in your studies. π
TLDR;
I do recommend you keep learning more about what you are most interested to (Frontend with good React and JS). Eventually you might get more curious about backend and will try to get better at that as well, and chances are, that interest might came from the need to making sure a Frontend module works as expected, making you Miriam, not only able to craft visually appealing UI stuff but also cook a fully functional piece.
Hi @mdohr07 , hope you doing great!
I wanna share my pov with you. It's great that you are realizing you might be getting into a comfort zone.
First, I do believe having a comfort zone is perfectly normal. It's your special place where things will undoubtly go nice 99% of the time π .
But a problem arises when our special zone stops us from growing in knowledge. π§
The way I think about that is "Learning something new, it's always welcome".
It's about tricking my mind. Then I set up a good pivot thinking scenario, for example: "This UI looks awesome, but the data it displays it's wrong, the hell is doing the backend coder ??!! ". And that gives me a purpose to actually learn just enough to solve a clear problem.
Mind tricks, when we constantly using them, eventually become your standard way of thinking.
I hope you can relate to my telling and extract the message I tried to convey.
Keep cooking! β¨
Thank you for the support guys, your replies made me worry a little less.
I could imagine getting more interested in the Backend later for my personal and professional growth. Currently I feel like I am supposed to learn everything at once. Right now we have some vacation time (yay!) which I use as such, but I also do some practice projects with React which I feel motivated to do :)
