On October 5, at Advertising Week New York, TikTok dropped six commerce and advertising updates in a single announcement. Most of what's new can't be switched on by most advertisers yet, and the one update that changes your numbers this quarter is a math problem, not a button.
What actually changed
- Buy Direct — in-app checkout letting shoppers buy from your own store without leaving TikTok, built on Shopify, Salesforce, Shoplazza, and Stripe integrations.
- Shopping Assistant — conversational AI agent answering product questions using merchant-provided information.
- GMV Max cost-awareness — automated shopping campaigns now factor in affiliate commissions, coupons, and referral fees.
- TikTok Ad Network — campaigns extended to nearly 400,000 third-party apps, now open to US advertisers.
Buy Direct: merchant of record matters most
Under Buy Direct, the order is yours — your checkout, your customer data, your post-purchase experience. You keep the contact details you need to sell to that customer again. But it requires Universal Commerce Protocol integration, it's gated behind eligibility testing, and Salesforce described a phased rollout expected in Q1 2027. Don't rearrange your Q4 around it.
GMV Max: rebuild your ROI target from margin
TikTok's automated campaigns can now weigh affiliate commissions and coupons instead of chasing gross merchandise value. But TikTok doesn't know your cost of goods, packaging, or returns rate. An ROI target of 4 on GMV can still lose money per order. Example: $48 product, $13 landed cost, 6% referral fee, 12% creator commission, $5 coupon, $4.50 fulfillment = $16.86 contribution. Breakeven ROI: ~2.85. Your target is arithmetic on your own costs, not a benchmark.
The Ad Network: don't be first in line before Black Friday
Same playbook as every audience network: more reach, cheaper impressions, contexts you didn't choose. Your 9:16 sound-on video might play muted next to a mobile game. Late-November volatility means you can't tell whether a new tool helped or hurt. January is the right window.
