From Business Education to Software Engineering: My Journey Into Tech

I didn't study Computer Science. I studied Business Education.

For a long time, I never imagined that I would find myself pursuing a career in software engineering. But life doesn't always follow the path we originally planned.

My journey into tech wasn't just about learning how to write code. It was also about making a decision to start again, learning things I had never learned before, and figuring out where I wanted my life to go.

I joined Semicolon Africa to learn software engineering. It was a different environment, a different kind of learning, and a challenge I had to commit myself to fully.

There were sleepless nights, difficult concepts, bugs that refused to make sense, and moments when I had to go back and try again. Learning to think like a software engineer takes more than memorizing syntax. You have to learn how to break problems down, understand why things work, and keep trying when your first approach fails.

One thing this journey taught me is that changing direction doesn't mean your previous experience was wasted. My background in Business Education is part of my story, even though I'm now building a career in tech.

I'm also learning that becoming a software engineer isn't the finish line. There is still so much to learn, so many problems to solve, and so much room to grow.

Now, I'm interested in building useful software, contributing to open-source projects, collaborating with other developers, and becoming better at my craft.

This is my first post on Dev.to, and I want to use this space to share what I'm learning, the things I'm building, the mistakes I make, and the lessons I pick up along the way.

I'm not here to pretend I know everything. I'm here to learn, build, share, and grow.

If you're also transitioning into tech or finding your way as a developer, I'd love to hear your story.

What's one thing your journey into tech has taught you so far?
