What Do You Actually Own as a Developer?

I spend a lot of time thinking about how to build software, but I rarely stop to think about who actually owns what I build.

Last week, I attended a session on Intellectual Property (IP), and it made me realize that every developer should understand the basics of copyrights, patents, trademarks, and trade secrets.

One thing that stood out was the difference between creating something and actually having the legal rights to protect it. We also learned what each type of IP covers, what it doesn't, and where you can go to register and protect your work.

Although the session was aimed at creators in general—including photographers, filmmakers, designers, and writers—I found it especially relevant as a developer. We often focus on shipping features and pushing code, but protecting our work is just as important.

I'm still learning, but this was a great reminder that writing code is only part of the journey. Understanding your rights as a creator is another skill worth investing in.

Have you ever looked into protecting one of your projects? I'd love to hear your experience.
