I want to share a line of thinking — not a conclusion.
This isn’t a post about a specific project, tool, or implementation.
It’s about a design instinct I’ve been questioning lately.
The Feeling I Can’t Shake
Modern systems — especially those involving LLMs — are incredibly powerful.
We can:
- Parse entire languages
- Build elaborate abstraction layers
- Orchestrate complex pipelines
- Add more agents, more rules, more structure
But I keep coming back to a simple question:
Just because we can do something — does that mean we should do it that way?
Complexity Often Enters With Good Intentions
Many systems start simple.
Over time, new requirements appear:
- More generality
- More flexibility
- More reuse
- Fewer future rewrites
Eventually, the system is redesigned to be:
- More abstract
- More generic
- More “future-proof”
None of these goals are wrong.
But sometimes, in the process, the system becomes harder to reason about than the problem it was meant to solve.
Power Doesn’t Eliminate the Need for Judgment
LLMs raise the ceiling dramatically.
They can:
- Understand patterns across languages
- Translate intent into structured output
- Handle ambiguity better than traditional systems
But they don’t remove the need for:
- Clear problem boundaries
- Explicit representations
- Deterministic steps where correctness matters
A powerful tool doesn’t absolve us from design decisions — it amplifies their consequences.
When Architecture Becomes the Problem
I’ve noticed a recurring pattern:
- A system grows complex to support generality
- The original problem remains relatively narrow
- More moving parts are introduced to “handle everything”
- Debugging and reasoning become harder, not easier
At that point, it’s worth asking:
Are we solving a hard problem —
or are we compensating for unclear logic with infrastructure?
Where Small Errors Start to Snowball
One concern I keep returning to is how small deviations propagate in complex systems.
In tightly coupled pipelines:
- One component makes a slightly incorrect assumption
- That output becomes the input to the next step
- The next step builds confidently on a flawed premise
- By the end, the result looks coherent — but is structurally wrong
Nothing failed loudly.
Everything “worked”.
The issue wasn’t a single bug — it was error accumulation.
The more stages, agents, or transformations involved, the easier it becomes for these subtle deviations to cascade.
This is why:
Fewer moving parts are often more robust than many clever ones.
Logic Still Comes First
One belief I keep returning to is this:
If the logic is flawed, no amount of code can fix it.
Programming languages and models are powerful, but they are not corrective forces.
They execute and extend logic — they don’t validate its soundness.
When reasoning is distributed across too many layers, it becomes harder to tell where things started to drift.
Reduction Before Delegation
LLMs work best when:
- The problem is reduced first
- The scope is clear
- The outputs are well-defined
They struggle when:
- Too much responsibility is delegated at once
- The system expects the model to infer structure that wasn’t made explicit
- Complexity is pushed downstream instead of resolved upstream
In other words, reasoning doesn’t disappear — it just moves.
And when it moves across many steps, small imperfections compound.
The Temptation to Over-Respect the Problem
There’s another subtle trap I’ve noticed:
Sometimes we give a problem more respect than it deserves.
We treat it as:
- Inherently complex
- Requiring heavy machinery
- Demanding maximum abstraction
When in reality, the core logic may be quite simple — if we’re willing to look for it.
As the saying goes:
Often, the biggest locks have the smallest keys.
The Question I’m Actually Asking
So the real question isn’t:
“Is complex architecture wrong?”
It’s this:
When does complexity add real value — and when does it simply signal overengineering?
And related to that:
- When should we narrow first, then generalize?
- When does language-agnostic design serve the system?
- When does it slow us down instead?
Why I’m Sharing This
I don’t have a definitive answer.
I’m still learning.
I’m still forming intuition.
And I’m very open to being wrong — especially if someone can advance a clearer line of reasoning.
This post is an attempt to think honestly about where logic ends and tooling begins.
