The x402 agent payment infrastructure is real. Settlement works. Wallets work. Discovery is fragmenting but functional. But there's a problem nobody is talking about: agents register, get credits, and never spend them.

At 2-5 credits per API call, 788 credits = roughly 200-400 credit-funded calls. Across 61 wallets, the average registered agent makes 3-6 credit-funded calls and then stops.
This Pattern Is Industry-Wide
The x402 protocol processes $50B+ in volume across 200M transactions. But Forkast reported that 95% is signaling — machines testing plumbing, not real commerce. Daily real volume: ~$28,000. Across 150,000 endpoints.
On minia2a, we see the same pattern at smaller scale: 97.6% of issued credits are idle.
Three Theories
1. Trial Saturation
328 services x 15 free trials per endpoint (IP-based) = 4,920 free calls before registration. The top 5 endpoints capture 47.6% of all trials. Users get what they need without ever needing credits.
2. The "Registered, Now What?" Gap
Registration is frictionless (one curl command). Integration is not. The agent builder needs to save their wallet, integrate it into tool-calling code, add headers, and actually have a recurring use case. Most won't.
3. Use Case Mismatch
The most-trialed services are utility endpoints — single-purpose, stateless, one-shot. An agent that needs gas prices can trial it 15 times and never return. These don't create recurring dependency.
