Moving from UK to Cyprus as a Developer: Real Tax Numbers for 2026

The UK abolished its Non-Dom regime in April 2025. Combined with frozen tax thresholds pushing more developers into the 40% bracket, record employer NI costs, and the "Awful April 2025" cost-of-living increases, the math on staying in Britain is getting harder to justify for remote developers.

This is what Cyprus actually looks like as an alternative - with numbers, not marketing.

The UK Tax Situation in 2026

A UK-based remote developer earning GBP 120,000/year faces:

Tax Rate Amount
Income tax (40% band) 40% ~GBP 30,000
Income tax (60% trap at GBP 100-125k) 60% effective ~GBP 15,000 on that slice
National Insurance 8% + 2% ~GBP 5,760
Total burden ~42-48% ~GBP 51,000-58,000

The GBP 100k-GBP 125k band is particularly punishing: every extra pound results in 60% effective tax because the personal allowance is progressively removed.

The Cyprus Alternative: Structure and Numbers

A UK developer moves to Cyprus, incorporates a Cyprus Ltd, and takes profit as dividends.

For EUR 150,000 total company profit:

Layer Rate Amount
Cyprus corporate tax 15% EUR 22,500
Remaining profit - EUR 127,500
Dividend income tax (Non-Dom) 0% EUR 0
GHS healthcare levy on dividends 2.65% EUR 3,379
Total ~17% ~EUR 25,879

Effective rate on distributed income after corporate tax: approximately 5%. Compare to 42-48% in the UK.

The 60-Day Rule Explained

Cyprus tax residency does not require full-time residence. You qualify under the 60-day rule if:

  1. You spend at least 60 days in Cyprus in the tax year
  2. You are NOT tax resident in any other country that year
  3. You do not exceed 183 days in any single other country
  4. You maintain a permanent residence in Cyprus (rented qualifies)
  5. You have ties to Cyprus, such as being a director of a Cyprus company

For a remote developer who travels, this is workable. Cyprus as a base for 2 months per year, travel freely the rest.

Non-Dom Status: What It Gives You

As a new Cyprus tax resident from the UK, you automatically qualify for Non-Dom status for up to 17 years.

Benefits:

  • 0% income tax on dividends (from any country)
  • 0% income tax on interest income
  • 2.65% GHS healthcare levy only on investment income
  • No Special Defence Contribution (SDC)

Without Non-Dom: dividends from a Cyprus company carry 17% SDC. With Non-Dom: 0% income tax + 2.65% GHS only.

UK-Cyprus Double Tax Treaty

The 2018 UK-Cyprus DTT ensures:

  • 0% withholding tax on dividends paid from UK companies to Cyprus residents
  • 0% withholding on interest payments
  • No double taxation on the same income stream

If you have existing UK company shares or investment accounts, the treaty protects you.

UK Exit Considerations

The UK does not have a formal exit tax like Spain or Germany. However:

  • Leaving mid-year creates a split tax year with separate calculations
  • New "temporary non-residence" rules: if you return within 5 years, some gains made during absence may be taxed on return
  • Developers with unvested share options or significant unrealized gains should get specialist advice before the departure year

Cost of Living Comparison

Category London Larnaca, Cyprus
2-bed apartment GBP 2,000-3,500/mo EUR 700-1,200/mo
Groceries (monthly) GBP 400-600 EUR 200-350
Dining out (mid-range) GBP 20-35/meal EUR 10-20/meal
Internet (1Gbps fiber) GBP 40-70/mo EUR 25-35/mo

Outside Limassol, developers typically spend 40-50% less per month for a comparable lifestyle.

Is This Right for You?

Makes sense if:

  • You earn GBP 80k+ as a remote developer and want to control your effective tax rate
  • You can structure income through a company (not purely PAYE-dependent)
  • You are comfortable spending 60+ days/year in the Mediterranean
  • You can demonstrate genuine relocation intent

Does NOT make sense if:

  • All income is PAYE and cannot be restructured
  • You need UK residency for family or visa reasons
  • You cannot show genuine economic substance in Cyprus
