🌱 GardenMate AI — Touch Grass with AI
This is a submission for the "Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 1: Touch Grass" (https://dev.to/challenges/hacktoberfest-week1-2026-10-05)
What I Built
GardenMate AI is an AI-powered gardening companion designed to help people spend less time on screens and more time taking care of real plants.
The idea is simple: instead of using AI only for digital tasks, GardenMate AI helps users take action in the physical world.
Users can use the app to get gardening guidance, understand what their plants need, and get suggestions for taking care of their garden.
It is designed for students, beginners, home gardeners, and anyone who wants to start spending more time with plants and nature.
🌱 The goal is simple: use AI as a guide, then put the phone down and touch grass.

How I Built It
I built GardenMate AI using Google AI Studio and an open-source development workflow.
The project was developed with AI-assisted coding in Google AI Studio, then the source code was stored in GitHub and deployed using Vercel.
Tech / Tools Used
- 🤖 Google AI Studio
- 💻 AI-assisted development
- 🐙 GitHub for open-source code
- ▲ Vercel for deployment
- 🌱 AI-powered gardening experience
The AI is not meant to keep users inside the app. Instead, it helps users understand what they can do outside the screen and encourages real-world gardening activities.
Why Does Open Innovation Matter?
Open innovation makes it possible for developers and students to experiment, build, share, and improve ideas without needing a large team or expensive infrastructure.
For GardenMate AI, an open-source workflow means that other developers can explore the project, suggest improvements, contribute features, and build on the idea.
Instead of AI being something that only answers questions on a screen, this project explores how AI can encourage people to interact with the real world.
That is what makes open innovation exciting to me: we can take an idea, build it, share it openly, and let the community make it better.
My Agent Session
I built the project using AI-assisted development.
I can add my DevRelay agent session here if available.
