Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 2: Side Hustle Submission 💸

LocalBiz AI: Helping Small Businesses with Open-Source AI

This is my submission for the "Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 2: Side Hustle" (https://dev.to/challenges/hacktoberfest-week2-2026-10-12).

What I Built

I built LocalBiz AI, an AI-powered web application designed to help small businesses simplify their daily work.

Small business owners often have limited time and resources to manage their operations. My goal is to use AI to make business tasks easier, more accessible, and affordable.

LocalBiz AI is my attempt to turn open-source AI into a practical tool that can create real value for local businesses.

My goal is to validate the idea with real users and develop it into a sustainable side hustle.

Code

The project is being developed with a focus on accessible tools, a mobile-friendly experience, and an architecture that can support open-weight AI models.

How I Built It

I used Google AI Studio to help develop LocalBiz AI and deployed the web application using Vercel.

My development approach focuses on building a practical MVP with free and accessible tools, keeping the interface simple, and exploring how open-weight AI models can power useful features.

I am particularly interested in models such as Qwen and other open-weight language models that developers can adapt to their own applications.

My goal is to make open AI technology useful for everyday business problems rather than building just another AI demo.

Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

Open innovation gives developers the freedom to experiment, learn, customize, and build solutions without depending entirely on proprietary AI services.

For small businesses, this can create opportunities for more affordable and accessible technology.

For me, this project is also a learning journey. I want to understand how open-weight AI can be integrated into real applications and how those applications can solve practical problems.

I believe the future of AI should include tools that independent developers and small businesses can build, adapt, and improve together.

My Side Hustle Goal

My goal is to move beyond a prototype and find my first real user.

I plan to introduce LocalBiz AI to a local business owner, gather feedback, improve the application, and explore a sustainable business model based on actual customer needs.

Building something useful for one real person is my first step toward building something bigger.
