App Store Optimization in 2026: 8 changes that actually move installs in India

Summary. India's mobile app market generated a record $345 million in consumer spending in the second quarter of 2026, up 35% year on year, while quarterly downloads have sat at roughly 6.3 billion since 2023 — the growth is now in revenue per download, not volume. Sensor Tower data reported by TechCrunch on 31 July 2026 puts India's Q2 revenue growth ahead of Mexico at 30% and Turkey at 25%, against a 3% decline in the United States. Non-gaming categories accounted for 68% of India's app revenue in the first half of 2026, up from 58% three years earlier, and ChatGPT and Claude together took close to 83% of India's AI app revenue in Q2. Against that, the store mechanics changed too: Google Play now runs AI-powered Q&A that answers 95% of user queries and is layering Ask Play on top, while Apple still caps product page optimization at 3 treatments per test, one test at a time, running up to 90 days. Apple's own case studies show why testing beats intuition — Simply Piano's hypothesis that an app preview video would lift conversion was wrong, and the original page won by 3% at 100% confidence. This guide covers what we do for Indian app teams, in the order we do it.

App Store Optimization stopped being a keyword exercise some time ago. In 2026 it is three jobs: get found in a search surface that is increasingly a conversation, convert the impression once you get it, and keep the install alive long enough that the store's engagement signals work for you rather than against you.

1. the Indian market shifted from installs to revenue per download

The number that should reset your ASO targets is not downloads. India's quarterly app downloads have been broadly flat at around 6.3 billion since 2023, and download volume rebounded to 25.5 billion for the full year 2025 after dipping to 24.6 billion in 2024 from 25.9 billion in 2023. What moved is monetisation: revenue per download has more than doubled over the past three and a half years.

Eve Chen, an insights analyst at Sensor Tower, told TechCrunch: "We would describe India today as a rapidly evolving mobile market with a large user base and growing willingness to pay for digital services." She attributed the shift to wider adoption of digital payments, including the Unified Payments Interface and digital wallets, which cut friction on in-app purchases.

The gap is still wide. Revenue per download stands at about $4.60 in the United States, $3.90 in South Korea and $6.10 in Japan, against a small fraction of that in India. For an ASO programme, that has a concrete consequence: optimising purely for install volume in India buys you cheap users and a bad payback period. Optimising the listing for the segment that converts to a subscription is the work that pays.

2. Store search became conversational, and metadata is no longer the whole game

Paul Feng, VP of Google Play Engineering, Product and UX, wrote in the I/O 2026 Play announcement on 19 May 2026: "Your apps and the incredible worlds you build are no longer just a single destination, but connected experiences that reach users across surfaces and devices."

Concretely, Google Play shipped Ask Play, an AI-powered overlay that treats discovery as a conversation, understands the full context of a question and adapts to follow-ups. It sits on top of AI-powered Q&A that Google says already answers 95% of user queries, and Ask Play highlights summarises complex searches directly on the results page.

The practical effect is that your listing now has to answer a question, not match a string. A long-tail keyword stuffed into the Play Store short description does much less than a description that states, in plain sentences, who the app is for and what job it does. That is the same content discipline that governs AI search optimisation for GEO and AEO, applied to a store instead of a search engine.

3. Discovery moved outside the store

Two Google Play surfaces now feed installs from outside the store itself, and both need engineering work rather than copywriting.

App discovery in the Gemini app on Android and web connects apps and games to Gemini users, and Google said Gemini would later surface over 450,000 movies and TV shows plus live sports and deep-link users directly into app content.

Engage SDK surfaces reach over 30 million monthly active users and drive millions of app opens every month, a 45% increase year on year. From June 2026, existing users see Engage SDK content directly on your store listing, tablet home screen Collections were added, and every Engage SDK surface scales across over 80 Play markets.

If you have not integrated Engage SDK, your store listing is now less rich than a competitor's for your own existing users. That is an ASO problem solved in code.

4. Apple's testing rules cap how fast you can learn

Apple's product page optimization has hard limits, and they set the pace of any iOS ASO programme.

Apple ASO surface Limit What it is for
Product page optimization test Up to 3 treatments, one test at a time, up to 90 days Testing icons, screenshots and app previews against your original
Test audience Randomly selected people on iOS and iPadOS 15 or later Same treatment shown for the test duration
Confidence threshold Apple recommends at least 90% before applying a treatment Avoids shipping noise as a winner
Custom product pages Up to 70 additional product page versions for iPhone and iPad Campaign-specific and audience-specific landing pages
Alternate app icons All icon variants must ship inside the published binary Icon tests need a release; non-icon tests do not
Test naming Reference name up to 64 characters Matching results back in App Analytics

Two rules inside that table decide your roadmap. Because you can run only one test at a time for up to 90 days, an iOS team gets roughly four clean experiments a year unless tests conclude early. And because alternate icons must be in the binary, an icon test is coupled to a release train while a screenshot test is not. Plan the icon test around a release; run screenshot and preview tests in between.

5. Test results are frequently the opposite of the pitch

Apple publishes two developer stories on its product page optimization page, and both are worth reading before you approve a screenshot brief.

Simply Piano tested the hypothesis that adding an app preview video as the first asset would beat screenshots alone. One treatment, 12 days. The result went the other way: the original product page without the video outperformed the treatment, by 3% conversion rate at 100% confidence.

Peak Brain Training tested the hypothesis that a robot-design icon would convert better than other designs. Three treatments, 44 days. The brain icon won at +8% with over 98% confidence, while the orange icon came in at -2.9% and the robots icon, the one in the hypothesis, at -3.5%.

The honest reading is that neither team's intuition survived contact with data, and both learned something worth more than the test cost. The real cost of ASO is usually the release cadence, not the design.

6. Conversion levers, ranked by what they cost you

Lever Effort Evidence it moves the number
App icon test High: icon variants must ship in the binary Peak Brain Training: +8% conversion at >98% confidence over 44 days
First screenshot and value proposition Medium: metadata only, App Review approval Apple designs the test around exactly this comparison
App preview video Medium, and not a guaranteed win Simply Piano: original beat the video treatment by 3% at 100% confidence
Custom product pages per campaign Medium: up to 70 versions on iPhone and iPad Aligns the page with the ad that drove the tap
Custom store listings on Play Medium: per-segment or per-URL listings Google Play Console supports listings targeted to user segments or a unique URL
Engage SDK integration Engineering work, one-off Over 30 million monthly active users across surfaces, up 45% year on year
Localisation into Indian languages Medium, now partly automated Play Console pre-populates listings across languages from an uploaded CSV or Sheet using Gemini models

The localisation row is the one most Indian teams under-use. Play Console will pre-populate listings across languages from a structured upload for your review, and it can generate a custom store listing tailored to a keyword recommendation from the Grow overview page in one click. That removes the excuse that Indic-language listings are too much manual work.

7. Retention and payment health now feed the loop

Google Play made two changes in 2026 that quietly matter more than most metadata work.

The default account recovery period moved from 30 to 60 days, which Google says drove up to an 18% reduction in involuntary churn and a 9% reduction in total churn for top developers. Delayed charging grants low-risk users access to paid content while a failed payment retries in the background.

Neither is an ASO lever in the classical sense. Both change the retained-user base that the store's engagement signals read, and both are free — Google applies them with no developer work. If your subscription app is losing users to expired cards, you are also losing the ranking signal.

Google also added the reporting to see this. A new reach metric shows an app's total visibility on Play, including store listing value that was not previously reported, and traffic source breakdowns tie a listing view to downstream engagement, retention and monetisation. Cart conversion rate joined the core performance metrics, so checkout friction is now measurable next to listing conversion rather than guessed at.

8. Compliance changes that break listings

Two dated items belong on any Indian app team's ASO calendar.

Apple updated the age rating questionnaire on 9 July 2026 to include social media questions. Any app with user-to-user features needs the questionnaire re-answered, and an age rating change alters where the app is eligible to appear.

Separately, if your listing or in-app flow collects personal data from Indian users, India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 governs the notice and consent you show, and the Play Data safety section and Apple's privacy nutrition labels must describe the same collection your code performs. A mismatch between the two is a removal risk, not a marketing detail.

India-specific considerations

Three things shape an Indian ASO programme in 2026.

The revenue mix has moved. Non-gaming categories took 68% of India's mobile app revenue in the first half of 2026, up from 58% three years earlier, and Google One became India's highest-grossing mobile app in Q2 2026. Streaming apps including Amazon Prime Video, Crunchyroll, Sony LIV and JioHotstar all grew consumer spending. Gaming revenue rose 3.7% quarter on quarter against a worldwide decline.

Generative AI concentrated the money. ChatGPT and Claude together accounted for nearly 83% of India's AI app revenue in Q2 2026. Appfigures founder and Chief Executive Ariel Michaeli told TechCrunch that ChatGPT generates about $60,000 a day in India on roughly 1.8 million downloads over the past month, down from around $80,000 a day the previous October. A category can be enormous and still be winner-take-most; check the concentration before you build an ASO plan around a category ranking.

Language is the cheapest remaining edge. India's download volume has been flat for three years, so incremental installs come from segments that are not yet served in their own language. Play Console's Gemini-assisted localisation and Apple's per-localisation treatments in product page optimization both make this a configuration task rather than a translation project.

How we run an ASO engagement

We work in 90-day cycles, because Apple's test window sets the clock.

Weeks 1-2 are measurement: baseline store impressions, conversion rate and revenue per download by country and language, plus a listing audit against both stores' current requirements. Weeks 3-4 set up the first test — screenshots and first-asset order on iOS if there is no release imminent, icon if there is — and the matching Play custom store listings. Weeks 5-12 run the test, ship the Engage SDK integration if it is missing, and build out Indic-language listings. At the end of the cycle we apply a winning treatment only where a treatment beats the baseline at 90% confidence or better, and we start the next test.

Indicative engagement model: a fixed-scope 90-day cycle for a single app on both stores, or a retained monthly team where an app ships continuously. We publish the test log, including the tests that lost, because the losing tests are what stop you repeating the design. ASO rarely runs alone — most app teams pair it with paid acquisition, and the tap-to-listing handoff is where budget leaks, so read it alongside PPC advertising and Google Ads ROI and our wider view of what a digital marketing company in Gurugram should be accountable for.

This is for teams that already have an app in market with real install volume — product page optimization needs impressions to reach significance, and Apple's own duration estimator exists because low-traffic apps cannot finish a test inside 90 days. If you are pre-launch, the money is better spent on the build. Our note on India versus US app development cost covers that decision, and app subscription and billing engineering covers the monetisation plumbing that makes revenue per download move.

FAQ

How long does an App Store product page optimization test take?

Apple runs one test at a time for up to 90 days, or until you stop it. You can include up to three treatments. Apple recommends waiting until a treatment is performing better or worse than the baseline with at least 90% confidence before applying it or ending the test early.

Do app preview videos always increase conversion?

No. Apple's published developer story for Simply Piano tested exactly that hypothesis over 12 days with one treatment, and the original product page without an app preview video outperformed the video treatment by 3% conversion rate at 100% confidence. Test it on your own audience rather than assuming.

How many custom product pages can an iOS app have?

Apple allows up to 70 additional versions of your product page on the App Store for iPhone and iPad. These are separate from product page optimization tests, which are not available for custom product pages or for product pages on the App Store for Apple Watch or iMessage.

What changed in Google Play search in 2026?

Google introduced Ask Play, an AI-powered overlay that turns discovery into a conversation, understands the full context of a query and adapts to follow-ups. It builds on AI-powered Q&A that Google says already answers 95% of user queries, plus Ask Play highlights that summarise complex searches on the results page.

Is India's app market still download-led?

Downloads are flat and revenue is growing. Quarterly downloads have stayed around 6.3 billion since 2023, while Q2 2026 consumer spending hit a record $345 million, up 35% year on year. Revenue per download has more than doubled over the past three and a half years, per Sensor Tower.

Does Engage SDK affect my store listing?

Yes. From June 2026 existing users see Engage SDK content directly on your store listing. Engage SDK surfaces reach over 30 million monthly active users and drive millions of app opens each month, a 45% increase year on year, and every surface now scales across over 80 Play markets.

Which Play Console metrics should an ASO team watch in 2026?

Google added a reach metric covering an app's total visibility on Play including previously unreported store listing value, traffic source breakdowns that connect a listing view to engagement, retention and monetisation, and cart conversion rate inside the core performance metrics so checkout friction shows up alongside listing conversion.

What did Apple change about age ratings in July 2026?

Apple updated the age rating questionnaire on 9 July 2026 to include social media questions. Apps with user-to-user features need the questionnaire answered again, and a resulting age rating change affects where an app is eligible to appear on the App Store.
