Starting Computer Engineering in 2026 — What Should I Focus on First?

Hi everyone!
I've recently started my Bachelor's in Computer Engineering and I'm currently in my first semester. I'm starting almost from the basics and want to build a strong foundation rather than rushing into advanced technologies.
I'd really appreciate advice from people working or studying in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Embedded Systems, or related fields.
A few things I'm confused about:
• Which programming language should I focus on first?
• What fundamentals should I master during my first year?
• When should I start working on projects?
• Should I explore embedded systems, software development, or both initially?
• What mistakes should a beginner avoid?
