Challenge.gov, the federal portal for prize competitions, was retired on March 30, 2026. Its archive moved to GSA's challenges-and-prizes repository on GitHub. Active challenges are now ordinary web pages on USA.gov, one page per challenge, with no API, no RSS and no export, and some agencies post challenges only on their own sites. The old community scraper read challenge.gov's home page, so it stopped working the same day.

So I built a small open replacement: federal-prize-feed.

https://github.com/munimv2/federal-prize-feed

It reads USA.gov's active-challenge listing plus each challenge page (slowly, honoring the site's 10-second crawl delay), merges in a hand-checked list of challenges that only agency pages show, and publishes:

  • data/active.json and data/active.csv: sponsor, open and close dates, challenge types, prize lines, a parsed cash total, contact, application link, status and source for every challenge
  • data/feed.xml: an Atom feed you can add to any feed reader
  • data/deadlines.ics: one all-day event per closing date, to subscribe in Google Calendar, Outlook or Apple Calendar
  • data/federal-register.json: Federal Register notices from the last 12 months that announce prizes and challenges

On October 14, 2026 the feed held 19 open or upcoming challenges with about $36.7 million in stated cash prizes. They range from the Army's xTech|Search 10 (small businesses, closes October 19) to the ACL Caregiver AI Prize (open until 2029). Three of them appear only on NASA's pages, not on USA.gov: the $2 million TechLeap Orbital Clarity Challenge (registration closes October 28), the $150,000 Lunar Grounding Challenge and the Space Apps hackathon on November 14-15.

A few things I learned while building it:

  • Most federal prize notices in the Federal Register cite 15 U.S.C. 3719, the America COMPETES prize authority. Searching the Federal Register API for "3719" and keeping notices whose titles name a challenge or prize finds challenges USA.gov never listed, such as NASA's Deep Space Food Challenge and HHS's EHIgnite Challenge.
  • USA.gov's dates and the agencies' own pages do not always agree. xTech|Kinetic Reach is on USA.gov until November 30, but xTech's own page says its submission window has closed. Always read the official rules before you apply.
  • Several agency pages are stale or hard to read automatically: HHS's challenge page still links to challenge.gov addresses, and NIH's page and HeroX block plain HTTP fetches. The repo's sources.md keeps track of these.
