vLLM's --api-key leaves /invocations, /tokenize and /pause open. Lock it down with an allowlist proxy

If you run vllm serve --api-key ... and think the server is now private, read vLLM's own security guide. The key is checked "only for endpoints under the /v1, /v2, /inference, and /cohere path prefixes", and "many other sensitive endpoints are exposed on the same HTTP server without any authentication enforcement." The guide's advice: "Do not rely exclusively on --api-key for securing access to vLLM."

Routes the guide lists as open without a key include:

  • /invocations: the same inference as /v1
  • /pooling, /classify, /score, /rerank, /tokenize, /detokenize
  • /pause, /resume, /abort_requests, /update_weights

And vllm serve listens on every interface unless you pass --host: the launcher binds (args.host or "", args.port), and "" means all interfaces. Docker's -p 8000:8000 does the same on the host. So anyone who can reach port 8000 can run prompts on your GPU, pause the server or cancel other users' requests, key or no key.

The guide calls a reverse proxy that allowlists endpoints "the most effective approach". Here's a small version of it.

1. Bind to localhost, key in an environment variable

export VLLM_API_KEY="$(openssl rand -hex 32)" # keep a copy for your clients
vllm serve Qwen/Qwen3-8B --host 127.0.0.1 --port 8000 --disable-fastapi-docs
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

VLLM_API_KEY keeps the key out of the process list, where --api-key would show it to every user on the machine. Keep it set even behind the proxy, so a proxy mistake doesn't open /v1. Never set VLLM_SERVER_DEV_MODE=1 on a reachable server: it adds /collective_rpc, which the guide calls "extremely dangerous".

With Docker, publish with -p 127.0.0.1:8000:8000, or give the vLLM service no ports: and publish only the proxy. On Linux, ports Docker publishes skip ufw and firewalld.

2. Caddy: only the routes your apps call

llm.example.com {
    @api path /v1/chat/completions /v1/completions /v1/embeddings /v1/models
    @api_with_key {
        path /v1/chat/completions /v1/completions /v1/embeddings /v1/models
        header Authorization "Bearer PASTE_YOUR_KEY_HERE"
    }

    handle @api_with_key {
        reverse_proxy 127.0.0.1:8000 {
            flush_interval -1
        }
    }
    handle @api {
        respond "Missing or wrong API key" 401
    }
    handle {
        respond 404
    }
}
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Different matcher types inside one named matcher must all match, so @api_with_key needs an allowed path and the exact header. Handle blocks with named matchers run in the order written, first match only; the one without a matcher runs last. path is an exact match, so /invocations, /tokenize, /pause and /metrics all get 404.

3. Or nginx

map $http_authorization $vllm_key_ok {
    default                        0;
    "Bearer PASTE_YOUR_KEY_HERE"   1;
}

server {
    listen 443 ssl;
    server_name llm.example.com;
    ssl_certificate     /etc/letsencrypt/live/llm.example.com/fullchain.pem;
    ssl_certificate_key /etc/letsencrypt/live/llm.example.com/privkey.pem;

    location ~ ^/v1/(chat/completions|completions|embeddings|models)$ {
        if ($vllm_key_ok = 0) { return 401; }
        proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:8000;
        proxy_http_version 1.1;
        proxy_buffering off;
        proxy_read_timeout 600s;
    }

    location / {
        return 404;
    }
}
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

4. Test every layer

# no key: 401
curl -s -o /dev/null -w "%{http_code}\n" https://llm.example.com/v1/models
# with the key: your model
curl -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_KEY" https://llm.example.com/v1/models
# routes --api-key doesn't cover: 404
curl -s -o /dev/null -w "%{http_code}\n" -X POST https://llm.example.com/invocations
# from ANOTHER machine, straight to vLLM: should fail to connect
curl --max-time 5 http://<server LAN IP>:8000/version
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

If the last one answers, the proxy can be skipped: check --host, Docker ports: and ss -tlnp | grep 8000.

The proxy doesn't cover node-to-node traffic

vLLM's guide says traffic between nodes (PyTorch distributed, KV-cache transfer, parallelism) is "insecure by default", and PyTorch's TCPStore listens on all interfaces. Keep multi-node setups on an isolated network and set VLLM_HOST_IP to the private address. If you run disaggregated serving with P2pNcclConnector on 0.9.2 to 0.23.x, update: GHSA-vfp2-c8pq-v6h6 let an X-Request-Id header leak KV-cache data, and the proxy above passes that header through.

And the proxy isn't a substitute for updating. Anyone with the key still reaches the inference code that most of vLLM's 30+ advisories since 12 September are in, most with no CVE ID and not in OSV. 0.31.0 fixes all of them.

The full page has a Docker Compose version and the mistakes to avoid: vLLM --api-key doesn't cover every endpoint. To check which advisories affect your version, there's a free checker that runs in your browser.
