πŸ” How Community Feedback Helped Strengthen Our Security Tests

Update β€” 21 October 2026 | AL-NOOR Student Chat

One of the most rewarding moments in our AL-NOOR Student Chat journey came after publishing our original case study:

πŸ“– Building a Private Classroom Chat with Codex and Supabase

A fellow DEV Community member, Cenk KURTOĞLU, shared thoughtful security feedback highlighting three critical questions:

  1. Read Security: Can students access messages from classrooms they don't belong to?
  2. Write Security: Can students send messages to unauthorized classrooms?
  3. Update Security: Can students modify someone else's messages?

πŸš€ From Community Feedback to Real Testing

Rather than simply thanking Cenk, I asked OpenAI Codex to review these concerns against our existing implementation.

The review confirmed that our text messages use authenticated database functions with class-access checks rather than direct browser table inserts.

We also expanded our local PostgreSQL security regression tests.

βœ… Verification Results: 28/28 Tests Passed

  • Unauthorized cross-class reads returned zero rows.
  • Cross-class message submissions were rejected.
  • Unauthorized message updates were denied.
  • No permissive FOR ALL or UPDATE policies were found in the tested local schema.

Important: These results reflect local database verification, not an independent security audit of the deployed Supabase environment. Production policy verification remains a separate step.

πŸ’‘ The Bigger Lesson

As an educator working with AI-assisted development, this experience reinforced an important lesson:

We didn't just receive feedback. We turned community feedback into testable security checks.

AI helped implement and verify our ideas, but human judgment, real-world classroom requirements, and constructive developer feedback made the process stronger.

Special thanks to Cenk KURTOĞLU for sharing his technical insights and contributing to our learning journey.

Great software doesn't grow in isolation. It grows through collaboration, constructive criticism, and continuous improvement. 🀝

when you rolled the community‑submitted test vectors into CI, did you have to tune the detection thresholds to curb false positives?
