Your 404 page is losing you customers (a 10-minute fix for small business sites)

Old links never fully die. A page gets renamed, a service gets dropped, someone shares a link with a typo, and a potential customer lands on a "404 Not Found" screen with nothing on it. Most of them just hit Back and pick the next business on Google.

A useful 404 page turns that dead end into a second chance. Here's what to put on it:

  1. Say what happened in plain words. "Sorry, we couldn't find that page" is enough. Skip the jokes if your brand isn't jokey.
  2. Keep your normal header and menu. The visitor should still feel like they're on your site and be able to navigate away.
  3. Link your 3-4 most visited pages. Usually Services, Prices, About and Contact.
  4. Show the main action. A "Call us" or "Book a visit" button belongs here too, because that's why most people came.
  5. Add a search box if your site has more than a handful of pages.
  6. Return a real 404 status code. Don't redirect every missing URL to the homepage; Google treats that as a "soft 404" and it confuses people.

Bonus: when you rename a page, add a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one, so fewer people ever see the 404 at all. Most hosts (Vercel, Netlify, cPanel, WordPress plugins) make this a one-line change.

Quick check: type yourdomain.com/this-does-not-exist in your browser right now and see what a lost visitor sees.
