I built HorizonX to give Android TV and Google TV a more customizable home screen. It is an open-source launcher project focused on the TV experience: remote-friendly navigation, animated cards, and a cleaner way to reach apps and content.
The profiles shown are for demonstration.
What it includes
- A background that follows the selected item, with expanding app cards
- Weather, a time-based greeting, and an app row that expands to the full app list
- Explore and Continue Watching rows
- App-opening animation, a custom volume display, and full-screen settings
- English, Spanish, and Portuguese support
- A small APK (about 500 KB) with no ads
Installation
You can sideload the APK from USB using a file manager on the TV, or use the included PC/ADB installer. The PC package provides scripts for Windows, Linux, and macOS and needs Python 3.10+ and Android Platform Tools. The README includes setup steps and instructions for switching back to the original Home screen.
HorizonX is primarily for Android TV and Google TV. The repository also contains experimental installers for Samsung Tizen, Roku, Fire TV, and Hisense VIDAA; those ports have not been tested on those TVs.
This post was created with AI assistance and its feature and installation details were checked against the project README. The source, APK, screenshots, and full instructions are here: https://github.com/2207juan/HorizonX
If you try it, I would love to hear which TV model you used and what worked or felt awkward with the remote.
