DevLog 20250713: ReMarkable vs OneNote (on iPad)

The Original Issue

OneNote won't open on iPad. The intent was to have auto-syncing even though I never liked OneNote due to overall distracting design.

ReMarkable (pro) is more comfortable to the eyes in all scenarios even on moving trains, despite slower responsiveness than iPad.

The most important feature is (despite constrained rather than infinite canvas):

  1. Limited size form-factor: single size paper
  2. Objects are vectorized and selectable (when eraser is not used): useful when moving things around
  3. Zoom-in and to some extent allowing detailing
  4. Optional layer management: it's more efficient if we can avoid using layers

Sketchbook on iPad generally works poorly as all iPad design software we've tried mostly due to GUI issue - plus the storage issue.

(20250911) The Proposed Solution - Proposed specs (final)

It would be so good if we have such commercially available device.

Base configuration (cost-optimized)

  • SoC: RK3588 SBC (8 GB RAM SKU)
  • RAM: 8 GB LPDDR4X
  • Storage: eMMC 5.1, 128 GB (socket or solder-down)
  • Display: 10.3″ e-ink 1872×1404, ≥15 Hz, high-refresh controller if available
  • Wireless: 2.4/5 GHz Wi-Fi (SDIO module)
  • Ports: 2× USB-C (one PD-in, one data), no other buttons/slots
  • Battery: 50 Wh, fanless heat spreader
  • OS: Ubuntu 24.04 ARM (GNOME) (or Kubuntu with Plasma desktop)

Pro configuration (snappy boots, heavier workloads)

  • Same as Base, but UFS 256–512 GB (solder-down iNAND UFS 3.x)
  • Optional 16 GB RAM variant if for large workspaces
  • Consider Manjaro ARM (Plasma 6) image for users who prefer Plasma
