How to Get Your Site Cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity & Google AI Overviews

Getting your site cited by AI search engines — ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews — is a traffic channel that doesn't need you to rank #1 for anything. I run a free-tool site (tooly.work, 53+ free browser tools), and I've been restructuring content for AI citability. Here's the playbook.

The first-paragraph rule

AI engines decide whether to cite you by quickly determining if your page contains the answer. So answer the primary question in the first paragraph. No throat-clearing intros.

Instead of "Converting bank statements can be challenging for many users...", write:

You can convert a bank statement to CSV using a free online tool that supports PDF, OFX, QFX, and QIF formats from banks including Chase, Citibank, Wells Fargo, and Bank of America — usually in under 2 minutes, no signup.

Direct answer + concrete specifics = citable.

Question-shaped headings

Use H2/H3s that mirror how people actually ask questions. "Benefits" → "How Does the Bank Statement to CSV Converter Work?" "Features" → "What File Formats Does It Support?" AI engines use heading structure to map sections to queries.

Concrete numbers and named facts

AI prefers content it can confidently cite:

  • "Supports 15+ bank formats" instead of "Supports multiple formats"
  • "Chase, Citibank, Wells Fargo, Bank of America" instead of "major banks"
  • "Completes in under 90 seconds" instead of "Fast"
  • Version numbers and timeframes where relevant

Vague copy gets skipped; specific copy gets quoted.

Scannable format

Short paragraphs (2-3 sentences), bullet lists, bolded key terms (file formats, bank names), and a summary section. The easier your content is to extract from, the more likely it gets extracted.

Measure it

Watch referral traffic from chat.openai.com, perplexity.ai, and Google AI Overview sections. One free-tool site reported AI-mediated traffic reaching 15% of monthly visitors within 4 months — with better engagement than average organic visitors.

do we think structured data actually moves the needle for perplexity, or is it mostly just high quality backlinks now?
