What I Learned While Building My First Website with WordPress

Building my own website turned out to be a different experience from the work I'd done writing for other websites.

As a content writer, I was familiar with creating content for the web. But building a website from scratch meant thinking beyond the words on a page. I had to consider the layout, design, user experience, and how everything would come together.

Starting with a Figma Wireframe

My first step was creating a wireframe in Figma. It was my first time using the tool, so I had to learn how to turn my ideas into a visual layout.

The wireframe helped me plan the structure before moving on to the actual website. I could think about where each section belonged, how visitors would navigate the page, and how the content would flow.

It also taught me that having an idea for a website and planning how people will use it are two different things.

Moving from Figma to WordPress

Once the wireframe was ready, I started building the website using WordPress and Elementor.

I was already familiar with WordPress from my editorial experience, but using it to build my own website was a new challenge. Instead of focusing only on publishing content, I had to work with page layouts, spacing, typography, colours, and responsive design.

Some things looked great in the wireframe but needed adjustments when I built them on the actual website. That process taught me to be flexible and make decisions based on how the finished page looked and worked.

Content and Design Need to Work Together

One thing I realised during the process is that good content alone isn't enough to make a website effective.

The information needs to be easy to find, the headings should guide readers, and the layout shouldn't make the page difficult to navigate. Even small choices, such as spacing between sections or the length of a paragraph, can affect how people experience a website.

As someone interested in both content writing and digital marketing, this was especially useful to learn through practice.

Building Something of My Own

The project eventually became Nilufer's Field, my personal website where I bring together my work, skills, and interests in content writing and digital marketing.

It gave me a chance to apply what I knew while learning things I hadn't worked on before. It also helped me understand the amount of thought that goes into creating a website that feels clear, consistent, and easy to use.

What I'd Take Forward

Building my first website taught me that the process involves much more than choosing a design and adding content. It requires planning, testing, making adjustments, and looking at the experience from a visitor's perspective.

I'm still learning, but working on a real project has helped me understand these concepts much better than simply reading about them.

If you're planning to build your own website, my biggest takeaway is simple: start with a clear structure, build one section at a time, and don't be afraid to make changes along the way.
