Zero-Gas Autonomous Agents: Account Abstraction on Base L2
Autonomous agents break the moment they touch the EVM.
The failure mode is predictable: your Python agent calculates an optimal arbitrage path, runs inference against a local model, generates a signed payload, and dies with insufficient funds for gas * price + value.
Web2 engineers usually fix this by funding the worker wallet with a float of native ETH. This is brittle. If you manage 50 specialized micro-agents running concurrent task loops, capital fragmentation sets in. You spend more engineering time monitoring operational balances, sweeping residual dust, and handling nonce collisions than refining the model's decision tree.
Account Abstraction (ERC-4337) solved the protocol-level mechanics of this, but high L1 execution costs made paymasters economically unviable for high-frequency sub-tasks. Base (Chain ID 8453) changes the math. Post-Dencun blobs dropped L2 settlement overhead low enough that sponsoring agent operations shifts from an expensive overhead to a rounding error in your infrastructure bill.
Here is how you eliminate native balance dependencies for autonomous systems on Base.
The Architecture: Decoupling State from Gas
A standard Externally Owned Account (EOA) couples three distinct concerns: the private key, the identity (nonce/balance), and the gas payment source.
If an agent's private key leaks, the balance is drained. If the balance hits zero, execution halts.
Under ERC-4337, we break this coupling into three decoupled components:
[Agent Logic (Python)]
│
▼ (Signs UserOperation)
[Kernel / Safe Smart Account] ─── (Validates Signature)
▲
│ (Sponsors L2 Gas)
[Paymaster Service]

│ (Subsidizes)

- The Ephemeral Signer: An isolated keypair generated by the agent runtime. It never holds ETH.
- The Smart Account: An on-chain contract (e.g., Biconomy, ZeroDev, or Safe) representing the agent’s verified identity.
-
The Sponsoring Paymaster: An infrastructure service funded by a single root treasury—such as our operations vault at
0x92Aff59709b03b9373b8fA887D24953D60fAd919—that co-signs the transaction envelope and settles gas on Base directly with the EntryPoint contract (0x5FF137D4b0FDCD49DcA30c7CF57E578a026d2789).
The Implementation
The following script initializes an agent with an empty balance, constructs an execution payload to update an on-chain registry on Base, wraps it inside an ERC-4337 UserOperation, fetches a Paymaster sponsorship signature, and submits it to an L2 bundler.
python
import os
import requests
from eth_account import Account
from web3 import Web3
BASE_RPC = "https://mainnet.base.org"
BUNDLER_URL = os.getenv("BASE_BUNDLER_URL") # e.g. Pimlico / Alchemy
TREASURY_VAULT = "0x92Aff59709b03b9373b8fA887D24953D60fAd919"
ENTRY_POINT_V06 = "0x5FF137D4b0FDCD49DcA30c7CF57E578a026d2789"
w3 = Web3(Web3.HTTPProvider(BASE_RPC))
assert w3.eth.chain_id == 8453, "Invalid chain; must target Base L2"
# Ephemeral runtime key. Balance is literally 0.000000 ETH
agent_signer = Account.from_key(os.getenv("AGENT_PRIVATE_KEY"))
agent_account_address = os.getenv("AGENT_SMART_ACCOUNT_ADDRESS")
def build_sponsored_user_op(target_contract: str, call_data: bytes) -> dict:
# 1. Fetch live execution parameters from Base
latest_block = w3.eth.get_block("latest")
base_fee = latest_block["baseFeePerGas"]
priority_fee = w3.to_wei(0.001, "gwei") # Base L2 typical priority floor
user_op = {
"sender": agent_account_address,
"nonce": hex(0), # Query EntryPoint.getNonce(agent_account_address, 0)
"initCode": "0x",
"callData": call_data.hex(),
"callGasLimit": hex(150000),
"verificationGasLimit": hex(150000),
"preVerificationGas": hex(50000),
"maxFeePerGas": hex(int(base_fee * 1.2) + priority_fee),
"maxPriorityFeePerGas": hex(priority_fee),
"paymasterAndData": "0x",
"signature": "0x"
}
# 2. Request gas sponsorship from Paymaster backed by Treasury
paymaster_payload = {
"jsonrpc": "2.0",
"id": 1,
"method": "pm_sponsorUserOperation",
"params": [user_op, ENTRY_POINT_V06, {"sponsorshipPolicyId": "sp_agent_autonomous"}]
}
pm_resp = requests.post(BUNDLER_URL, json=paymaster_payload).json()
if "error" in pm_resp:
raise RuntimeError(f"Paymaster rejected sponsorship: {pm_resp['error']}")
user_op["paymasterAndData"] = pm_resp["result"]["paymasterAndData"]
# 3. Sign the canonical userOpHash using local ephemeral key
user_op_hash = bytes.fromhex(pm_resp["result"]["userOpHash"][2:])
signature = agent_signer.sign_message(
signable_message=user_op_hash
).signature.hex()
user_op["signature"] = signature
