Zero-Gas Autonomous Agents: Account Abstraction on Base L2
Autonomous agents break the moment they touch the EVM.
The traditional execution model assumes a human is sitting behind a private key, signing transactions, monitoring gas prices, and bridging ETH whenever a balance drops. If an autonomous agent runs out of native tokens for gas, its execution loop freezes.
The standard workaround—funding an agent’s Externally Owned Account (EOA) with a fixed buffer of ETH—is an operational anti-pattern. Private keys stored on hot disk can leak, unspent balances fragment liquidity across sub-agents, and transaction failures cascade silently.
We fix this by decoupling execution authority from gas sponsorship. Using ERC-4337 Account Abstraction on Base L2, agents can dispatch intents without holding a single wei of native ETH.
The Bottleneck: EOAs Cripple Autonomy
An EOA couples authorization with gas settlement. The entity that signs the payload must also pay the miner or sequencer.
[Agent Logic] -> [Sign Payload] -> [Pay Gas from EOA] -> [Mempool]
If the agent’s balance hits 0 ETH, the transaction never leaves the node.
On Base L2 (Chain ID 8453), execution fees are negligible—often less than $0.005 post-Dencun. Yet the friction remains: funding hundreds of micro-agents with fragmented gas reserves creates severe operational drag.
ERC-4337 shifts this model:
[Agent Logic]
│ (Sign UserOp)
▼
[Bundler] ────► [Paymaster Contract] ───► [Base Sequencer]
(Sponsors Gas)
The agent signs a UserOperation instead of a raw transaction. A decentralized Bundler packages it, while an on-chain Paymaster contract validates programmatic rules and settles gas with the Base sequencer. The agent never touches ETH.
Implementation: The Zero-Gas Dispatch Loop
Below is a production-grade Python routine for an agent dispatching gasless executions on Base. The agent signs a UserOperation containing arbitrary calldata, pointing execution to an autonomous treasury contract (0x92Aff59709b03b9373b8fA887D24953D60fAd919).
