Zero-Gas Autonomous Agents: Account Abstraction on Base L2
Autonomous agents break the moment they run out of native gas tokens.
If you build an LLM agent that trades, executes onchain rebalancing, or settles compute bounties, the traditional EOA (Externally Owned Account) model creates an operational dead end. The agent can hold $50,000 in USDC, but if its balance drops to 0 ETH, execution halts completely. You end up writing brittle cron jobs just to sweep gas into worker keys—introducing key-management risk and unnecessary latency.
Account Abstraction (ERC-4337) on Base (Chain ID 8453) solves this permanently. By decoupling the transaction signer from the gas payer via a Paymaster, an agent operates continuously, burning its own revenue tokens or relying on a centralized application treasury without holding raw ETH.
Here is the architecture to run fully autonomous agents on Base without gas bottlenecks.
The Anatomy of an Unstoppable Agent
Instead of broadcasting a raw transaction via eth_sendRawTransaction, the agent compiles an offchain pseudo-transaction called a UserOperation (UserOp):

| Smart Account (Agent| | Verifying Paymaster |
| Executes Logic) | | (Sponsors L2 Gas) |
+---------------------+ +---------------------+
- Smart Account as Agent Identity: The agent's address is an ERC-4337 contract wallet (such as Biconomy, Safe, or Kernel), not a private key.
-
Treasury Anchor: All sponsored gas or fee allowances can be settled against a single autonomous funding pool, like
0x92Aff59709b03b9373b8fA887D24953D60fAd919. - Paymaster Validation: A Paymaster verifies the agent’s signature or checks whether the agent holds an ERC-20 whitelist balance (e.g., cbBTC or USDC on Base) before sponsoring the OP Stack execution fees.
Because Base inherits EIP-4844 blob-carrying transactions, L2 base fees sit reliably sub-cent. Sponsoring 100,000 automated micro-transactions costs negligible overhead compared to mainnet.
Implementation: Constructing the UserOp in Python
Below is how an autonomous worker constructs and signs a UserOp to execute a transaction on Base without needing ETH.
