Local SEO Strategy for Houston Sites: A Developer Guide

Developers often get asked to "do the SEO" on a local business site. For Houston clients, the answer is a repeatable set of technical and structural steps. Here is the strategy I use, in order.

1. Plan the site structure around services and areas

Houston is a multi-market city. Plan URLs that mirror how people search:

/                      -> brand + main service, Houston
/services/             -> hub page
/services/water-heater-repair/
/areas/katy/
/areas/sugar-land/
/areas/the-woodlands/
/contact/
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Each service and area page needs unique, useful content. Avoid thin pages where only the city name changes.

2. Write clean titles, headings and meta

  • One h1 per page with the service and city.
  • Title under 60 characters, with the main keyword near the start.
  • A meta description that reads like a short invitation to call or book.
<title>Water Heater Repair in Houston, TX | Brand Name</title>
<meta name="description" content="Fast water heater repair across Houston. Call today for a clear, honest quote.">
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

3. Add LocalBusiness schema (JSON-LD)

Place this in the <head> of the contact or home page. Replace every placeholder with real details that match the Google Business Profile exactly.

<script type="application/ld+json">
{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "Plumber",
  "name": "Your Business Name",
  "url": "https://www.example.com/",
  "telephone": "+1-713-555-0100",
  "image": "https://www.example.com/images/storefront.webp",
  "address": {
    "@type": "PostalAddress",
    "streetAddress": "123 Example St",
    "addressLocality": "Houston",
    "addressRegion": "TX",
    "postalCode": "77001",
    "addressCountry": "US"
  },
  "openingHoursSpecification": [{
    "@type": "OpeningHoursSpecification",
    "dayOfWeek": ["Monday","Tuesday","Wednesday","Thursday","Friday"],
    "opens": "08:00",
    "closes": "17:00"
  }],
  "areaServed": ["Houston","Katy","Sugar Land","Pearland"]
}
</script>
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Use the most specific @type that fits (for example Plumber, Dentist, Electrician) instead of the generic LocalBusiness when possible. Validate it with Google's Rich Results Test and the Schema Markup Validator.

How Nomira Digital helps: We add and test structured data as part of every build, so search engines and AI answer tools can read the business details correctly. See nomiradigital.com.

4. Keep NAP consistent

The name, address and phone in the schema, footer, contact page and Google Business Profile must match character for character. Inconsistencies weaken trust signals.

5. Connect the site to the Google Business Profile

Link the profile to the exact landing page you want (usually the home page or a location page), embed a map on the contact page and add a click-to-call link:

<a href="tel:+17135550100">Call (713) 555-0100</a>
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

6. Performance and mobile

Local traffic is mostly mobile. Keep LCP under 2.5 s, INP under 200 ms and CLS under 0.1, and make the call button reachable without scrolling.

7. Make the content easy for AI search to quote

Short, direct answers under clear headings, an FAQ section and consistent business facts make a page easier for AI assistants and search features to cite.

<h2>Do you serve Katy and Sugar Land?</h2>
<p>Yes. We serve Houston, Katy, Sugar Land and Pearland.</p>
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

8. Track results

Set up Google Search Console and GA4, track calls and form submissions as conversions, and review which pages and queries bring local traffic each month.

Launch checklist

  • [ ] Service and area pages with unique content
  • [ ] Titles under 60 characters, one h1 each
