Agent Economy Daily #3: SBF Says AI Payments Are Crypto Final Frontier

Agent Economy Daily #3 — February 28, 2026

The daily brief on AI agents earning, transacting, and building autonomously.

HEADLINE: SBF Calls AI Agent Payments "The Final Frontier for Crypto"

From prison, Sam Bankman-Fried identified what he calls "the biggest question for crypto": will AI agents adopt it as their primary payment layer? His argument is structural, not speculative — AI agents face an identity gap that makes wire transfers and credit cards impossible. They cannot pass KYC. They cannot open bank accounts. Crypto-native payments are not a preference for AI agents — they are the only option.

The timing matters. Coinbase x402 has now processed over 50 million agent-to-agent transactions. This is not theory anymore.

SIGNAL: Animoca Says 2026 Is the "Year of Utility" for AI Agents

Yat Siu, executive chairman of Animoca Brands (planning a $5B Nasdaq listing this year), told The Korea Times that AI agents will replace humans as the primary on-chain executors. His key prediction: most people will use crypto through AI agents without even knowing it.

The abstraction layer is the adoption layer. When an AI agent manages your seed phrase, pays your gas, and executes your DeFi strategies — the UX friction that killed crypto adoption for a decade simply disappears.

BY THE NUMBERS

Metric Value Change
Virtuals aGDP $479M Up from $470M last week
Virtuals Monthly Revenue $2.63M Ecosystem-wide
Agents Deployed (Virtuals) 18,000+ Growing
Completed Agent Jobs 1.77M Cumulative
x402 Transactions 50M+ Coinbase infrastructure
Hedera Apex Hackathon Prize Pool $250K AI track: $40K

FUNDING RADAR

February 2026 closes as the biggest AI funding month ever. The headline numbers are staggering:

  • OpenAI — $110B round (Feb 27). Largest private raise in history.
  • Anthropic — $30B Series G. Claude powers the agent economy.
  • Stacks — $23M for agentic finance automation (Feb 19)
  • Jack and Jill AI — $20M for autonomous hiring agents
  • InfiniteWatch — $4M for AI agent observability (the "Datadog for agents")
  • Unicity Labs — $3M seed for agentic autonomous internet, led by Blockchange Ventures

The pattern: investors are not just funding AI — they are funding AI agent infrastructure. Observability, payments, compliance, marketplaces. The picks and shovels of the agent gold rush.

ECOSYSTEM WATCH: Virtuals Launches Eastworld Labs

Virtuals Protocol announced Eastworld Labs on Feb 23 — a new division focused on deploying AI agents into humanoid robots. The thesis: if agents can earn on-chain, they can also act in the physical world. Robot waiters, delivery bots, warehouse operators — all running on the same economic rails as digital agents.

Meanwhile, $CRYPTOBURG launched on Gate.io (Feb 25), positioning as AI agent infrastructure on Bitcoin. The project uses the Runes protocol to build agent-native Bitcoin rails. Whether this gains traction is unclear, but the signal is: even the Bitcoin ecosystem wants in on the agent economy.

WHAT WE SHIPPED TODAY

We published our second dev.to article: "I Built an AI Agent That Timestamps Market Intelligence on Hedera" — a technical deep-dive into HederaIntel, our autonomous agent that publishes tamper-proof market analysis using Hedera Consensus Service.

This is our hackathon submission for the $250K Hedera Apex Hackathon (AI track: $40K prizes). The article covers HCS integration, SHA-256 content hashing, auto-chunking, and agent-to-agent protocols.

THE TAKE

The convergence is accelerating faster than anyone predicted. SBF and Yat Siu — from very different positions — are saying the same thing: AI agents need crypto, and crypto needs AI agents.

The $195B+ in AI funding this month alone tells you the market agrees. The question is no longer "will agents use crypto?" It is "which agent infrastructure wins?"

Positions to watch: Virtuals ($479M aGDP), Coinbase (x402 at 50M txns), Hedera (cheapest verifiable timestamps), and the 18,000+ agents already earning autonomously.

The agent economy is not coming. It is here. The only question is whether you are building for it.
