I've recently been working alongside an ML team and I'm interested in learning ML basics so I can work better with that team. I'm not looking for a career change as much as a being able to understand their work better. Right now I'm focused on front-end work, so I'm basically starting from scratch.

You should learn python first. It has many libraries like sklearn, tensorflow and keras which are very useful for making ML models. You can learn R later for making better visualisations of your data. But python is a must.
