EU Chat Control Just Passed
on july 9, 2026, the european parliament passed Chat Control 1.0. most people dont even know it happened.
what it means: platforms like Gmail, Facebook Messenger, and Skype can now scan your private messages without a warrant. no suspicion needed. no court order. just mass surveillance.
what exactly is Chat Control
Chat Control 1.0 is an EU regulation that lets messaging platforms voluntarily scan your communications for CSAM (child sexual abuse material). sounds reasonable until you realize:
- it applies to ALL messages, not just suspicious ones
- it doesnt require a warrant or any suspicion
- platforms can scan encrypted messages too
- the scanning is automated (AI-based, lots of false positives)
why this matters for everyone
the argument is always protect the children. but the reality is:
- mass scanning catches everyone, not just criminals
- AI-based detection has high false positive rates
- once the infrastructure exists, it gets expanded
- Chat Control 2.0 (permanent version) is already being negotiated
how to protect yourself
switch to Signal
Signal is the gold standard for encrypted messaging. end-to-end encrypted, open source, minimal metadata. the EU cant scan what they cant see.
use Session for maximum privacy
Session doesnt even require a phone number. routes through an onion-style network. if you need deniability, Session is your best bet.
avoid WhatsApp and Telegram
WhatsApp is owned by Meta. Telegram doesnt encrypt by default. both are targets for Chat Control scanning.
use AI tools that dont store your data
if youre using AI for sensitive topics, switch to tools that dont log your conversations. NanoGPT accepts crypto payments and has minimal data retention. local models like Ollama are even better.
whats next
Chat Control 2.0 is the permanent version. it will REQUIRE scanning, not just permit it. and it will target encrypted platforms specifically.
the window to protect yourself is now. once 2.0 passes, switching to Signal wont be enough if your device itself is compromised.
