The Gamification Trap
In 2024, every app wanted two things from you:
- Your credit card.
- Your daily streak.
Duolingo, Headspace, and even meditation apps weaponized loss aversion. "Don't break the chain!" they screamed. But for a mental health app, this is toxic.
If you miss a day of journaling because you were having a great day with friends, that's a success. A streak counter calls it a failure.
Introducing "Rhythm" over "Streaks"
At GentleQuest, we've replaced the daily streak with Rhythm.
- Streaks demand 7/7 days.
- Rhythm looks at your rolling 30-day window. Did you engage enough to feel supported?
The Technical Challenge
Tracking "Rhythm" requires analyzing your history without becoming a surveillance capitalist.
We solve this using Local-First AI (powered by Nucleus).
- Your "Rhythm" score is calculated on your device.
- We don't specific logs of when you journaled.
- The server only receives an aggregate "Interaction Health" score for the global leaderboard (if you opt-in).
Why It Matters
When you build for mental health, your metrics must change. Daily Active Users (DAU) is a vanity metric if those users are doom-scrolling.
We optimize for Meaningful Sessions per Month. Quality over quantity. Silence over noise.
