I built my childhood dream: an open-source intelligence workspace
Ever since I was a kid, I was fascinated by CIA, intelligence, and hacker movies.
The giant maps.
The live aircraft.
The satellites.
The classified-looking interfaces.
The idea of taking hundreds of independent pieces of information and connecting them into something meaningful.
Obviously, Hollywood exaggerates almost everything.
But the idea stuck with me.
As I got older, I discovered platforms like Palantir and realized software like this actually existed. That made me wonder:
Why isn't there an open-source version anyone can build on?
So I started building Akashic.
What is Akashic?
Akashic is a self-hosted intelligence workspace that brings aircraft, satellites, earthquakes, weather, public radio, infrastructure, country intelligence, public cameras, and other open-source intelligence sources onto a single interactive map.
It isn't meant to be another dashboard.
It's designed for exploration.
Layers can be combined, entities can be inspected directly on the map, and live intelligence remains visible without taking over the experience.
Why build it?
Most intelligence software is either:
- Closed source
- Enterprise-only
- Extremely expensive
- Difficult to customize
I wanted something developers could actually own.
Something you could self-host.
Something people could contribute to.
Something that makes intelligence software accessible instead of exclusive.
That's what Akashic is trying to become.
It's still early
There's still a long way to go.
Akashic is in active development, and there are plenty of ideas left to build.
But every project starts somewhere.
