AWS: MIGRATION AND TRANSFER SERVICES

Database Migration Service (DMS)

DMS helps in migrating databases to or within AWS. It migrate on-premises databases to AWS.DMS offers continuous data replication which prevent data loss and no downtime. DMS also supports homogeneous and heterogeneous migrations.

HOW DMS WORKS IN REAL WORLD

1. Oracle to Aurora MySQL (Heterogenous migration): DMS migrate on-premises Oracle database to Aurora MySQL.
2. Oracle to Oracle (Homogenous migration):DMS migrate an on-premises Oracle database to Oracle on EC2.
3. RDS Oracle to Aurora MySQL (Heterogenous migration): DMS migrate an RDS Oracle database to Aurora MySQL.

Server Migration Service (SMS)

SMS allows you to migrate on-premises servers to AWS. SMS migrates on-premises servers to AWS. Server saved as a new Amazon Machine Image (AMI). SMS use AMI to launch servers as EC2 instances.

Snow Family

This part of AWS migration & transfer services allows you to transfer large amounts of on-premises data to AWS using physical device.

Snowcone : This smallest member of the snow family which have 8 terabytes of usable storage and offers Offline shipping with online with DataSync.

Snowball and Snowball Edge : A part of snoeball family that has petabyte-scale data transport solution and transfer data in and out of AWS. it is cheaper than internet transfer. Snowball Edge supports EC2 and Lambda.

Snowmobile : This has multi-petabyte or exabyte scale transport solution. Data are securely transported and loaded to S3.

DataSync

DataSync allows online data transfer from on-premises to AWS storage services like S3 or EFS. It copies data over Direct Connect or the internet and also copy data between AWS storage services. It replicate data across Region or cross-account. It migrates data from on-premises to AWS.
