Every month in 2026, roughly ninety thousand new business ideas get launched: Product Hunt posts, Show HN threads, GitHub repositories, Kickstarter campaigns, accelerator batches, and Reddit threads that begin with "I built". The State of New Business Ideas report collects all of it and scores a curated slice on the Launch Readiness Score (LRS). The August 2026 edition covers 181,011 records from 74 sources. Four findings hold.
The AI label now costs attention. Among Reddit launches with 25 or more upvotes, 5.6% carry "AI" in the title. Among launches with zero reaction, 19.9% do. Across nine months and 225,541 sector-tagged launches, AI's share peaked in March at 20.6% and fell every month to 14.8% in August. The absolute count fell 45% while total launches fell 24%.
Launching is a lottery, and the sector sets the odds. The median Product Hunt launch gets two votes; the top 1% take 39.5% of all votes. On Reddit, 67% of launches get no reaction. The silence rate by sector is stable across periods: 70% for AI, 52% for marketing tools.
Builders ship what buyers do not open. Developer tools are 14.9% of scored ideas and 5.9% of reader attention. SMB services are 4.1% and 17.0%. Only 2.6% of products ever appear on a second platform, and cross-posting does not move the median launch.
What separates winners is proof of payment, not pain. Between ideas above LRS 60 and below 35, monetization proof separates them by 47 points and demand by 41. Pain separates them by 15, an empty market by 5.
The Business Idea Demand Index reached 61.8, its highest reading, on a 16-point rise in monetizability with idea quality flat: buyers with budgets are more visible, the ideas are no better.
