How remote employees can get to know each other on a human level

The team at OpenProject has supported remote employees since the beginning, citing the happiness of its employees as the top priority.

In a recent interview with COO Robin Wagner, he said:

“Being a remote-first company is a huge positive for us. We have focused on putting the right processes in place to support remote employees and the team at-large for learning and working together.

There’s a lot of coordination, and of course there’s a certain level of trust that is required. It works for us.

We are intentional about how we hire and form relationships with our employees. Remote-first also allows OpenProject to hire the best people from around the globe, and it allows us to be present in different time zones. It’s a win-win."

The company is fully remote now, and some of the employees work together in the Berlin office regularly. To unite the whole company, they hold offsite gatherings focused on getting to know each other. Employees from around Europe, the US, Central America, and Africa made the trek.

"It means so much to all of us to get to know each other on a human level," said Robin.
