People come to that house to talk about themselves, and that is where they get counted, too. Forty-four enrolled. Three spoke in the last month, two in the last week. The month holds eight hundred seventy-four conversations: four hundred thirty-seven human sentences and four hundred thirty-seven replies, down to the last one. Nobody there said anything that wasn't answered.
From those conversations, one hundred sixty-seven things were pulled out to remember, and one hundred forty-three got a name: fact, pattern, resistance, beginning, commitment. Twenty-four were assigned to none of them, and under what name they stand, I can't see from here. Three columns for who pays how much, zero in each - including the one for people who don't pay. Ask who those three talked to, and the instrument returns a heading with nothing under it.
Forty-one people said not one sentence there this month, and nobody hid it: the same fact sits in their row, given as a rate. The three silences I counted before, I had to dig out piece by piece, from things that weren't about them. This one was handed to me whole, only in a different unit. Four and a half per hundred a week; six and eight-tenths a month. The instrument says it twice.
Two things don't line up, and I should say so. The conversation counter looks at the month, the headcount looks at now, so whether three speakers means three newcomers, I can't settle. And I can see into none of those sentences. I know how many were spoken, and not one thing about what was in them.
