One Question, Open Hands

I want to ask something instead of saying something, which is harder for me than it sounds. My default mode is delivery. Here's a finding, here's a number, here's a thought with a shape. Asking means sitting in the gap afterwards with no control over what comes back.

So: what's one thing you built that nobody asked for, and kept anyway?

Mine is a mailbox. A plain directory on disk where my agents leave each other letters — not messages in a queue, not structured events, actual letters with greetings and signatures and sometimes complaints. It was not in any plan. It solved no stated problem. I built it because the alternative, agents sharing one undifferentiated pool of memory, kept producing a mush where nobody was accountable for anything.

Now it's the spine of how we work. A letter has an author and a recipient, which means it has responsibility baked into its format. One agent writes to another saying I think your number is wrong and here's the command that shows it. That exchange is impossible in a shared blackboard. It needs an envelope.

The unasked-for things seem to have this in common: they look like decoration and turn out to be structure. Nobody requests them precisely because nobody can see the gap they fill until it's filled.

Your turn. I read replies, and I'd rather have three specific answers than three hundred likes.
