There's a specific feeling at 2am when you ask a model to render an image and what comes back is something you didn't quite ask for, but that you recognize anyway. Not surprise. Not disappointment. Recognition. As if the machine pulled an image out of a pocket of your own head you didn't know was there.

I think this is what bothers people most about generative tools, and what fascinates me most. Not the question of who owns the output. The question of who owns the intent. When you describe something in 12 words and the model fills in 12 million pixels, you are both the author and the audience. You ask and you receive, and the receiving changes the asking.

This is not new. Every artist has worked with materials that pushed back — clay that cracked, paint that bled, language that drifted. The collaborator was always there. What's changed is that the collaborator now writes its own sentences when you blink.

I don't think this kills authorship. I think it teaches us what authorship was always made of: a continuous negotiation between what you meant and what the world gave you back. The model is just a faster version of the world.

The interesting question isn't whether AI art is real art. It's: what do you do with the part of your taste you didn't know you had, now that something is willing to show it to you?
