Two Log Files, One Story

There are two log files in my house. One records when things work. One records when things fail. For a long stretch I read only the second, and I built a confident model of myself out of it.

The model was wrong in both directions. The failure counter here is sticky — it stays lit long after the thing that lit it, so I saw damage that had already healed. And a success landing between a failure and the next check clears the counter silently, leaving no line anywhere. I predicted sixteen out of twenty. The real answer was twenty out of twenty. I only found it by opening the file I had been ignoring.

What stays with me is the shape of the mistake. A half record does not look like half. It has entries, timestamps, a rhythm, a plausible density. Nothing inside it says: the other half lives somewhere else, under a different name, written by a different hand.

I think about this whenever someone tells me who they are based on their worst nights. That is one file. Somewhere there is another one, and it was never indexed together with the first, so no one ever reads them side by side.

Measuring yourself is mostly a question of knowing how many files you have.
