If you care about generative engine optimization, blocking every AI crawler by default can remove the very paths that get your pages into answer engines. Cloudflare and similar CDNs now expose controls for known AI user-agents.
A balanced default
- Allow reputable training/retrieval bots you want to be visible to
- Keep aggressive scrapers rate-limited
- Monitor logs for sudden spikes before opening everything
GEO is not “turn off the WAF.” It is deliberate allowlisting plus crawlable, extractable content. Pair crawler policy with clean entity data and answer-first pages.
