Latin roots hiding in programming vocabulary

If English is not your first language, a lot of programming words become easier once you see the Latin roots inside them.

  • struct (build): structure, construct, instruct, destructor
  • script (write): script, description, subscribe, manuscript
  • port (carry): import, export, portable, transport
  • ject (throw): inject, object, project, reject
  • dict (say): dictionary, predict, contradict, verdict
  • vert (turn): convert, invert, version, revert

Once you know that ject means throw, inject is "throw in" and reject is "throw back". You are not memorizing a new word, you are recognizing a piece.

A simple habit: when you meet an unfamiliar word in documentation, cover the prefix and suffix, find the root, and guess before you look it up. Add three more words from the same root to your notes.

If you want a longer list with examples, here is a page of top roots.
