Shopify BFCM 2026: A Builder's Checklist for Checkout, Bots and Email

Black Friday 2026 is November 27. If you build or maintain Shopify stores, the pre peak work that matters most is not new creative. It is checkout reliability, email deliverability and bot hygiene, in that order.

Checkout first

Audit the path a shopper actually takes on mobile. Surprise costs at checkout, forced account creation, missing wallets and optional fields that slow the form are the usual leaks. Baymard Institute research puts extra costs at the top of abandonment reasons. Fix those before you touch ad spend, and run a full test order after every app or theme change, not just after theme edits.

For recovery, pick one system. Klaviyo guidance suggests a first abandoned checkout email two to four hours after checkout starts, with a second 20 to 48 hours later. Shopify's own automation defaults to a longer wait. Running both sends duplicates. Choose one, set its filters, and switch the other off.

Email and bots are infrastructure, not marketing extras

For email, confirm SPF, DKIM and DMARC alignment, one click unsubscribe, and a spam complaint rate below 0.3 percent, which Gmail and Yahoo both require from bulk senders. Ramp to engaged subscribers for about two weeks before Black Friday, growing each send, and watch bounces and complaints daily during the ramp.

For bots, keep hCaptcha on for forms and account pages, use Shopify Flow to tag and review risky orders, and build a segment for bot profile patterns to suppress before BFCM sends. Remember that double opt in controls list membership, but an abandoned checkout flow is triggered by the Started Checkout event, so a bot that enters an email at checkout can still enter the flow unless you add a filter.

Do not compare across the analytics change

Shopify changed session measurement on September 21, 2026. Session based metrics after that date are a new baseline. For year on year BFCM comparison, use orders and revenue, which were not affected by that change.

Build BFCM changes on a duplicate theme, publish by mid November, then freeze theme and app changes until December. That freeze is what keeps a working store working through peak traffic.
