Nobody really expected Sony to come back swinging after the Xperia 1 VII got recalled just a month after launch. Quality control failures, outsourced production, and financial damage to the mobile division. That was the backdrop heading into 2026. And yet here comes the Xperia 1 VIII with the biggest telephoto sensor upgrade in the lineup's entire history: a 1/1.56-inch, 48MP sensor that is four times larger than what was in last year's phone.
What makes this interesting beyond the spec sheet is that Sony also switched away from the continuous zoom system it had used since the Xperia 1 III. A fixed 70mm telephoto with a massive sensor is a fundamentally different philosophy, and for mobile photographers who shoot RAW, the extension of multi-frame processing to every camera on the phone is just as significant.
Can Sony actually convert this camera upgrade into commercial success after everything that went wrong last year?
