India’s Strategic Shift: Strengthening Soil Health Through Science and Technology

India has launched a series of aggressive, science-led initiatives to transform soil management into a cornerstone of its national agricultural policy. Recognizing that soil health is inextricably linked to food security, rural economic stability, and climate change mitigation, the government has moved beyond traditional farming methods to embrace digital agriculture, precision nutrient management, and natural farming practices. Over the past several years, and particularly accelerating through 2025 and 2026, the country has deployed a multi-layered framework that combines grassroots outreach, high-resolution satellite mapping, and institutional reform to ensure the long-term fertility of its agricultural land.

The government’s approach is anchored by several flagship programs designed to address specific challenges in the agricultural sector. The Soil Health Card Scheme remains the primary tool for scientific nutrient management. As of March 13, 2026, the program has generated over 25.89 crore Soil Health Cards, providing farmers with precise, crop-specific recommendations based on rigorous soil testing. This data-driven approach is supported by 7.17 lakh field demonstrations conducted by Agricultural Technology Management Agencies (ATMA) and Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), ensuring that farmers understand how to apply fertilizers efficiently.

Complementing this is the National Mission on Natural Farming (NMNF), launched in 2024 to reduce reliance on chemical inputs. By March 2026, the mission had reached 18,786 clusters, covering 8.80 lakh hectares and enrolling over 18.19 lakh farmers. The program is bolstered by a network of 33,676 Community Resource Persons and the establishment of Bio-input Resource Centres, which provide natural alternatives like Beejamrit and Jeevamrit to maintain soil organic carbon.

Digital transformation is also playing a critical role. Under the Digital Agriculture Mission, platforms like AgriStack are integrating land, farmer, and soil data. By late 2025, over 7.63 crore Farmer IDs were generated, and 23.5 crore crop plots were surveyed during the Rabi 2024-25 season. High-resolution soil mapping is currently underway, with 29 million hectares mapped by September 2024, supported by significant financial assistance to states to accelerate the creation of reliable soil resource datasets. Furthermore, the Khet Bachao Abhiyan, launched in June 2026, reached 1.07 crore farmers through intensive awareness campaigns, field demonstrations, and training on green manuring.

Fertilizer policy has also undergone significant reform. The Nutrient Based Subsidy (NBS) Scheme now links subsidies to the actual nutrient content of fertilizers, while the mandatory 100 per cent neem coating of domestically produced urea has improved nitrogen-use efficiency. Between 2022-23 and July 2025, the government disbursed ₹6.77 lakh crore in fertilizer subsidies, ensuring that the transition to balanced nutrient application remains economically viable for the farming community.

Soil is the foundation of India’s agricultural economy, which supports more than 46 per cent of the country’s workforce. With nearly 59 per cent of the nation’s geographical area dedicated to agriculture, the health of the soil is a matter of national security. India’s diverse soil profile—ranging from black and red soils to alluvial and desert landscapes—requires localized management strategies. Historically, the overuse of chemical fertilizers and intensive farming practices led to concerns regarding soil degradation and declining fertility. The current government strategy aims to reverse these trends by aligning agricultural practices with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those concerning zero hunger and climate action. The integration of the Green India Mission and the Carbon Credit Trading Scheme further highlights the government’s intent to position soil as a vital carbon sink, capable of storing atmospheric carbon and enhancing resilience against climate variability.

By promoting balanced fertilization and natural farming, the government is not only improving farm productivity but also reducing the environmental footprint of agriculture. The use of AI-enabled platforms to detect nutrient deficiencies and monitor soil stress allows for precision farming, which minimizes waste and maximizes yield. Furthermore, the focus on soil organic carbon is a critical component of India’s climate strategy. By enhancing the soil's ability to retain moisture and store carbon, the country is building a more climate-resilient agricultural sector capable of withstanding the increasing variability of weather patterns. This, in turn, stabilizes rural incomes and ensures that the 46 per cent of the workforce dependent on agriculture can maintain sustainable livelihoods in a changing environment.
